MINUTES
( 9/15/99
Present: Margaret Cole, Beverly Goodridge,Keng Nan Hsu,Tom Montanan, Fair
Housing Committee; Jean Hibino and Jed Snyder; Cathy Abbott, Selectmen
Liaison; Steve Baran, Staff
Absent: Florence Baturin, Ralph Clifford,Michelle Ekanem, Mary Haskell, and Kathryn
Davis
1 Tom Montanan announced that he would be chairing meetings through
November. He and Peg Cole are Co-Chairs.
2. Ralph Clifford's wife has been ill but doing better. Ralph plans to attend
Christmas party
3 Jean Hibino and Jed Snyder were welcomed,their previous interests noted and
questions answered. Both were interested in the possibility of becoming members
and both approved to join the Committee. Jean's candidacy will be forwarded for
approval by the Selectmen on 9/27
4 A hate crime perpetrated against a Lesbian couple in Lexington was discussed.
Cathy and Steve had given many letters of support to the couple who were not
yet interested in appearing before the Fair Housing Committee. The Committee
was interested in the-history of the police response to hate crimes in the past, and
it was decided to invite Chief of Police Casey to the next meeting. Bev
Goodridge was interested in knowing if the police had ever apprehended
perpetrators in the past. Steve Baran will make available information about hate
- crimes.
( 5 Brochure draft to be reviewed by full committee at next meeting. Implications for
brochure in relntion_to.Towns-website_were_noted.-9rganizations,-not-names<-t^
be included.
6. Scheduling of meetings to be for the third Wednesday of every month at 7.45
p.m.
7 Florence Baturin will discuss AAUW interest in sensitizing newspaper response
to diversity issues.
8 To Montanari discussed need for better attendance in order for Committee to act
effectively Subcommittees may be established.
