HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-05-12-FHC-min.pdf ( Fair Housing Committee Minutes, 5/12/93 Present Mary Haskell, Acting Chairman; Marion Kilson; Oscar Liu; Bob Pressman; Jolley Anne Weinstock; Steve Baran, Fair Housing Director (recorder) Absent Florence Baturin; Jim Brannon; Peter Brown; Nicole T Herrmann; Leona Martin; Gerri Weathers Minutes of 4/14/93 The Minutes of 4/14/93 were approved with one correction The portion on page 2 which read "Bottom line 300 units over five years" with respect to Met State housing goal should read "300 units over an eight-year period " Met State Housing Statements supporting affordable housing at Met State Hospital have been obtained from the Enablement Committee, LexHab and the Lexington Housing Authority The Enablement Committee and LexHab supported the Fair Housing Committee's Statement on Fair Housing Need whereas the Lexington Housing Authority supported the principle of affordable housing These statements will be sent on to Met State planner, Joan ( Blaustein, with a copy to Leo McSweeney (see attached) There was a discussion about the Committee possibly taking a position on desirable percentages of low and moderate income housing The Committee agreed that it would be desirable to visit the Met State property with a view to seeing the buildings on a Sunday afternoon Diversity as Selectmen' s Goal Steve read draft statement suggesting diversity as a goal for the Selectmen to pursue The Committee offered suggestions as to how the statement could include suggestions for implementation Background documents The Committee reviewed background documents The first page of the Town Meeting Fair Housing Resolution was omitted from the package See attached for full resolution It was suggested that the Town should include racial, ethnic and disability questions as part of its periodic census Steve was asked to discuss with Bebe Fallick, Town Clerk Fair Housing Minutes, 5/12/93 Page 2 Patriots' Day Parade The Patriot's Day experience was reviewed since the Committee had participated Questions raised were Why was the Committee placed at the back? Shouldn't the Committee as a Town Committee march at front? Why was the Committee's title garbled when announced at the reviewing stand? Why was the description of the Committee omitted from the announcement even though the statement had been furnished to the Town Celebration Committee? Incident with METCO student The Chairman invited Bob Pressman to discuss his statement to the School Committee re a METCO student who had been removed from the Lexington school system after a knife incident Bob expressed his concern to the School Committee that a local student involved with a weapon had been dealt with in a different manner Questions raised were Should the METCO student have received counseling instead of dismissal? Why did an article describing the incident appear on page one of the Minute-man? Does the Fair Housing Committee wish to meet with the METCO Advisory Committee? Fair Housing Plan The Fair Housing Plan will be on the agenda for the next meeting It was agreed that the present Plan is too lengthy and complicated Members will proceed by listing primary goals and then consult the most recent version of the plan to see what else should be included See attached L
