HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989-09-13-FHC-min.pdf Fair Housing Committee Minutes, 9/13/89 Present Gerri Weathers, Chairman; Florence Baturin, Bob Pressman, Bill Spencer, Mary Haskell , Fair Housing Committee; Judy Moore, President, Lexington Newcomers' Club; Erna Greene, The Lexington Guide; Steve Baran, Fair Housing Director Minutes of meeting of 8/16 The Minutes of the meeting of 8/16 were accepted Newcomers' Club Judy Moore, President of the Newcomers' Club, explained that { criteria for admission were living in Town 3 years or less ; has undergone important life change, e g , has had a baby, remarried Ji Literature is sent to all newcomers ( information obtained through announcements of real estate changes) Also, flyers are left in the library and with realtors There is a kick-off get together once a year and speakers during the year, e g , Larry Whipple, Historical Society The purpose of the Club is to give newcomers an understanding of Lexington The membership is divided into three cooperatives for baby sitting purposes There is a five-year limit on membership Graduates belong to the "' Ole Res Club" Judy noted that the membership had dwindled possibly due to the advent of two-income families, possibly due to diminished real estate sales The membership is divided equally between men and women, and there are lots of Asian newcomers The Secretary of the Board is Asian There are hardly any Black members and very few singles Bill Spencer made the following suggestions The newsletter might be used to publicize non-Club events Judy said that the Board was exploring the possibility of expanding the newsletter Extra copies should be left in the Town Office Building for distribution Rita Sullivan will call Judy about newcomers in Lexington Housing Authority units JI f q Fair Housing Committee Minutes, 9/ 13/89 Page 2 The Lexineton Guide Erna Greene said that the Guide might be sold or it might be given away It was a "first" for Lexington and was patterned on guides from Maynard and Acton Entries are to be listed in an A - Z format and will include private and public entries beginning with "accessibility" The information will be retained on a disk with the potential for {{ being updated and/or used for other purposes Erna will publicize the Fair Housing Committee and its history There will also be a section on housing and its history with reference to the four Town committees concerned with housing A gazetteer will be included References will be made to volunteering and internships, neighborhoods and neighborhood organization, community organizations, contacts for each sport and the Recreation Department It was suggested that pictures be included to show diversity in the Town Poster Proiect Steve reported on a meeting with Vidya Bhatia of the Fair Housing Committee and Cari Luterman of the Enablement Committee to plan a poster on the 1988 Fair Housing Amendments which include fair housing for people with disabilities The planners felt that the tone should be one of cooperation. Therefore, a contest might not be appropriate Nancy Gordon of the School Department has been contacted to look for one or more interns who might wish to work on this project Fred Rosenberg of the Arts Council , Bill Crane of the Developmental Disabilities Law Center of Massachusetts and Kathie Gips of the Office for Handicapped Affairs are being contacted Respectfully Submitted, Stephen Baran, Human Services Coordinator
