HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-12-13-FHC-min.pdf Fair Housing Committee Minutes, 12/ 13/89 Present Gerri Weathers, Chairman; Florence Baturin; Jim Brannon; Mary Haskell ; Leona Martin ; Bob Pressman ; and Bill Spencer Minutes of meeting of 11 /8/89 Florence Baturin was present and not listed ; Bob Pressman was listed but did not attend Under Fair Housing Brochure printing to be on two- sided gray stock paper with burgundy type for lettering Under Housing Options Committee delete second sentence which reads as follows An Article is being prepared for the Warrant which closes in December i New Members The Town Manager' s office has no information pertaining to volunteers who would be suitable as candidates for the Fair Housing Committee Possible ways of advertising for candidates were discussed "help wanted" ad, cable TV public service announcement Debby Radway will be asked to request that the Board of Selectmen list vacancies on committees, including the Fair Housing Committee, in an article in the Minuteman Fair Housing Brochure Gerri , after receiving encouragement from Deborah Radway, Assistant to the Town Manager, about Town support for the mailing, obtained three bids as follows PIP $910; Wales, $930; and Sir Speedy, $895 (an additional $85 to make camera ready) It was decided to list contributors' names on the front of the brochure Two $50 gifts have already been received Ernest Tsai will approach realtors, believes he can raise half the amount Gerri Smith had asked Debby Radway about having the Town take responsibility for distributing the Brochure Debby did not think this was legitimate Town business, but the Committee felt that its was legitimate Gerri will discuss with Paul Marshall , and, if necessary, the issue will be taken up by the Board of Selectmen in which case the Committee members will be notified about the date Katandin Woods Demographics are awaited Countryside Gerri to investigate whether Lexington Housing Authority has Fair Housing Committee Minutes, 12/ 13/89 Page 2 jurisdiction over Countryside with regard to screening applicants for eligibility and, if they do, whether they can exercise it If they do not have such authority, Dick Perry of Countryside may be invited to appear before the Committee { Affordable Housing reports Pine Meadows Site Development Committee Report Leona reported that Gary Larsen' s study revealed a high water table in the area necessitating fill The neighborhood preferred 20 units although apparently not enthusiastic about having any units The Site Development Committee recommended 40 affordable rental units to be in part financed by lot sales The sale price for lots had been originally estimated at $200, 000 per lot, but the water level problem meant that they would be sold for considerably less Estimated building costs are $80 per square foot for market rate housing, and $65 per square foot for affordable units Options and Goals Committee Report A public meeting to be held before Thanksgiving was to discuss 30 different techniques to implement affordable housing and their usefulness for Lexington The Committee' s goal is to have a report ready for the March Town Meeting, and it will propose scattered, rather than concentrated, sites { Goals and Policy Task Force The Task Force is gathering data with Gerri interviewing Lexington realtors about why people refuse to buy housing in Lexington Gerri carried out an investigation on the impact low income children have on quality of schools Lincoln, Concord and Billerica reported that there was no problem, and Dr Geiger does not foresee any problems in Lexington Gerri further reported that the Battle Road complex in Lincoln had held a lottery for its units with 50% reserved for the Town and the remainder for the rest of the State Poster Contest Gerri will ask ET if he can attend meetings of the Poster Contest Committee since he is available during the day If this is not Fair Housing Committee Minutes 12/ 13/89 Page 3 possible, Steve will be asked to represent the Committee Curriculum Development Committee Jim Brannun volunteered to serve on the Curriculum Development Committee Patriots' Day Florence Baturin will contact other towns to see what type of parade participation has been carried out and will coordinate the activity for the Fair Housing Committee Next Meeting The next meeting date was set for January 10th Respectfully Submitted, Florence Baturin, Member, Fair Huusing Committee 1 4 ff 1
