AD HOC BUILDING FINANCE COMMITTEE
Minutes of Meetina April 28 1995 in Fiske School , as approved May 5,
1995
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Kelley at 8 05 a m with all
committee members except Garber and Pierce present Also attending was
Director of School Building Operation Moynihan and Ron Grammont of
Capital Expenditures Committee
School Enrollment projection report copies were passed around The
chairman reported that he had spoken with Superintendent of Schools Jeff
Young about the schools ' needs for space, requesting that the School
Committee make a statement about this The superintendent responded
that this would be accomplished after new principals for next year were
appointed
Comments from events and inspections of the past week Noted that the
library article in town meeting will support a completely open-minded
study, with pro bono library consultant Jay Lucker, head of MIT librar-
ies Lexington resident Conclusions of the study will not necessarily
indicate need for more space Aim is to make the library work more
effectively in the age of technology
The Cemetery Building did not appear to be in bad condition except for
the roof , which could be taken care within the maintenance budget In
addition, siding has been improperly installed and is causing rot
The Animal Control Building needs a reroofing and the trim is bad A
door has rotted Perhaps some venting is needed It is a small
building and its needs are simple Flashing at the chimney and exten-
sion of the roof overhang with a drip edge would help solve some of the
exterior problems Cutting of overhanging trees would also be an
important help
Estabrook Temporary Classrooms ' lifespan might be extended Addition of
a boiler room was recommended as less costly than electric heat pumps
Untreated lumber in the hallway areas should be replaced with pressure
treated framing Various schemes for enlarging and relocating the
cafeteria were reviewed, including a possible pushing out of the front
entrance area
In general , Moynihan reported, vandalism at schools is down However,
there was a recent incidence that tripped an alarm at police head-
quarters The perpetrators had left the building by the time the
officers arrived All schools now have motion detectors in hallways
Minutes of April 21 1995 were VOTED approved as submitted
Formal part of the meeting adjourned at 8 40 to tour the building with
Principal Joanne Benton The tour included the new library, with
heating problems , echoing turret and roof leaks as well as examples of
overcrowding for aides and special needs staff and preemption of a
Kindergarten lavatory The tour also viewed an ill-fitting exterior
door, walked around the school and climbed up onto the roof to see a
largely well -performing recent tar and gravel renewal
Respectfully submitted, tat, 24 Erna S Greene, Secretary
