HomeMy WebLinkAbout1995-04-28-BFC-min.pdf TOWN OF LEXINGTON AD HOC BUILDING FINANCE COMMITTEE Minutes of Meetina April 28 1995 in Fiske School , as approved May 5, 1995 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Kelley at 8 05 a m with all committee members except Garber and Pierce present Also attending was Director of School Building Operation Moynihan and Ron Grammont of Capital Expenditures Committee School Enrollment projection report copies were passed around The chairman reported that he had spoken with Superintendent of Schools Jeff Young about the schools ' needs for space, requesting that the School Committee make a statement about this The superintendent responded that this would be accomplished after new principals for next year were appointed Comments from events and inspections of the past week Noted that the library article in town meeting will support a completely open-minded study, with pro bono library consultant Jay Lucker, head of MIT librar- ies Lexington resident Conclusions of the study will not necessarily indicate need for more space Aim is to make the library work more effectively in the age of technology The Cemetery Building did not appear to be in bad condition except for the roof , which could be taken care within the maintenance budget In addition, siding has been improperly installed and is causing rot The Animal Control Building needs a reroofing and the trim is bad A door has rotted Perhaps some venting is needed It is a small building and its needs are simple Flashing at the chimney and exten- sion of the roof overhang with a drip edge would help solve some of the exterior problems Cutting of overhanging trees would also be an important help Estabrook Temporary Classrooms ' lifespan might be extended Addition of a boiler room was recommended as less costly than electric heat pumps Untreated lumber in the hallway areas should be replaced with pressure treated framing Various schemes for enlarging and relocating the cafeteria were reviewed, including a possible pushing out of the front entrance area In general , Moynihan reported, vandalism at schools is down However, there was a recent incidence that tripped an alarm at police head- quarters The perpetrators had left the building by the time the officers arrived All schools now have motion detectors in hallways Minutes of April 21 1995 were VOTED approved as submitted Formal part of the meeting adjourned at 8 40 to tour the building with Principal Joanne Benton The tour included the new library, with heating problems , echoing turret and roof leaks as well as examples of overcrowding for aides and special needs staff and preemption of a Kindergarten lavatory The tour also viewed an ill-fitting exterior door, walked around the school and climbed up onto the roof to see a largely well -performing recent tar and gravel renewal Respectfully submitted, tat, 24 Erna S Greene, Secretary
