AD HOC BUILDING FINANCE COMMITTEE
Minutes of Meetina May 5 1995 meeting at the Visitors ' Center, as
approved May 19 , 1995
A quorum was attained at approximately 8 10 a m as the committee walked
around the building exterior with Superintendent of Building maintenance
Fred Sweet The meeting was formally called to order by Chairman Kelley
in the upstairs meeting room at 8 30 a m with all committee members
except Garber and Pierce present
Noted outside the building was the peeling of the paint , largely
attributed to the tightness of the building, i e lack of venting in
places such as between the dormers and elsewhere Noted that the
building was erected in the late 1960s but that no insulation code
existed until the late ' 70s The town owns and pays for the upkeep of
the building but the Chamber of Commerce operates the visitors services
and has its offices upstairs
A small leak showed on the ceiling of a dormer in the meeting room On
the way upstairs the group looked over the first floor, particularly
emphasizing the need for the restrooms to be handicapped accessible
This was especially important as this is Lexington' s reception point for
thousands of visitors from all over the world Also noted that the
handicapped access requires going all the way around the building to the
rear, as the two steps in the front are altogether too high
Minutes of April 28 1995 were APPROVED as amended
Role of the Committee was again visited, noting that yet another
committee has been appointed - the Long Range Planning Committee
"We' re really second opinion priority setters " one committee member
commented Questioned if a master plan exists for the school , par-
ticularly what is likely to happen five to ten years hence Chairman
responded that next month the School Committee is supposed to be giving
projections to the committee Also committee questioned the status of
the Munroe School (still owned by the town and supposedly maintained by
the arts group tenants)
Formal meeting adjourned to a tour of the bandstand at 9 07 and then the
Chairman and one member continued after 9 30 to the building at the Old
Reservoir The next meeting, it is hoped will be May 12 and center in
East Lexington
i{ Bandstand improvements recommended included coating the
poured concrete
walls with a sealant and supplying a dehumidifier and air circulation in
the underneath storage area Outside, group members poked at the loose
railing - recommending replacement - and checked the poured concrete
floor - recommending patching the cracked and chipped away corners with
hydraulic cement The roof looked quite good, but the finial at the
peak probably should be replaced Moore told of a Grace Chapel group's
interest in accomplishing these renovations He will pursue with them
Old Reservoir Buildina problems appeared minor and within the scope of
maintenance
Respectfully submitted, 5".4-14- 2 trc Secretary to the committee
