HomeMy WebLinkAbout1929-10-29398 SELECTMEN+S MEETING - OCT. 29, 1929. A regular meeting of the 'Board of Selectmen was held at the Selectmen!s Office, Town Office Building at 7:30 P.M. Messrs. Burnham, Custatice, Chamberlain, Shannon and Blake were present. The Supt. of Public Works and the Clerk were also present. E.E.I.Co. Letter was written to the E.E.I. Co. asking that ischedule. they extend. their schedule so that the street lights will be on in -the morning at 6:04 'so that passengers going to the early train will have sufficient light to guide their way, this schedule to begin on November 10, 1929. iE.L.Dunn ' • At 8 P.M. hearing was declared open on .the garage grented'application of Mr. Ernest L. Dunn for permission to erect a one car garage on his premises at 280 Mass. Avenue.* Mr. Dunn appeared and presented the plan of the garage which is to be of concrete blocks. No persons appeared to object, and it was voted to grant the permit. It was voted to grant the petition of the E.E.I.Co. 'E.E.I.Co. to abandon one pole on Mass. Avenue approximately 3401 petition. southeast of Bedford Street. Alcohol Alcohol license was granted to the Shell Eastern license.' Petroleum Products Co., corner Bass. Ave. & Maple St. ,Benefit rate, Request was received from the Lexington Grange Lex.Grange. for the reduced rate for the use of Cary Memorial Hall on November 1, 19291, for a dance. The Board decided to grant them the benefit rate of $25.00. Letter was received from E. J. Brehaut, Boston Letter, re Chamber of Commerce, in which he made statements in traffic connection with the traffic light signals on the death c r signal of Mrs. G. W. Spaulding at the junction of Waltham lights. Street and Mass. Avenue. W.R.Greeley Letter was received from W. R. Greeley tending resingation. his resignation as Chairman of the Tercentenary Committee. Owing to the pressure of other matters, he did not see his way clear to carry out the Chairmanship' of this Committee: Mr. Custance, previous to the meeting, had invited Mrs F.;:Shdpard to accept the chairmanship, Mr. Shepard communicated with him, and stated that he would be glad to serve onthe Committee, but he did not wish to have the Chairmanship. The name of W. C. Hill was suggested, and it was decided to request him to accept the appointment. In the meantime, the Boatd was to have in mind a list of names of persons to serve upon the Committee. 1 D u Notice was received regarding the hearing on the Hearing .E.E.I.Co. rates, November 7, 1929 at 10:30 A.M. at the E.E.I.Co. Office of the Dept. of Public Utilities. rates. The Board signed water rate commitment in the dater amount of $2687.43. Commitment. Report was received from Mr. Wrightingto�ils .office stating that the Jury rendered a decision -in favor of the Town of Lexington in the Ryder pig case. Decision, Mr. Ryder now has the right of appeal within 20 Ryder case, days to the Supreme Court for another decision. Report was received from the Supt. of Public Works in regard to the cost of drainage work to be done on Drainage, Clematis Brook. He estimated the cost of doing the work Clematis from between Waltham Street and the old dam on the Hatch Brook. property as $14,000. He gave the names of owners having frontage on the brook and the number of feet of frontage. The Board felt that the people in the vicinity should be asked whether they would contribute to the cost of this work;,also that assessments to each one should be figured out. The matter was therefore returned to the Supt. of Public Works for further information. Letter was received from the Supt. of Public Works and also from the Town Accountant, regarding the pay of the new Engineers that were appointed. The Accountant Basis of desired to know whether their pay should be figured on pay of new a 52 day basis or a 6 day basis. The Supt. of Public Engineers. Works stated that he felt the new Engineers should be given their pay on the same basis as theothermembers of the Department. The Board also voted that the Engineers should receive their pay on the 6 day basis, ha7..-ing a one- half day holiday on Saturday. Various items of highway work such as patching Eliot Road,;,,fixg the trenches on Massa Avenue, patches on Various Follen Road, load of loam at the foot of Follen Road highway which is a'detriment to persons driving along inasmuch as items. it hides the view of the cars coming in the other direction., were called to the attention of the Supt. of Public Works ,The Board discussed the vulcanizing of streets as is done in the City of Boston. Mr. Custance stated Vulcanizing that suggestion was made that Mass. Avenue from Waltham of streets. - Street down could be done and the car tracks would not have to be removed. Healey case 35.00 Fred Helm 11 15.-0000 U70.00 The following is the weekly report of the Supt. of Public Worksz For the week ending October 26, 1929. Highway Department. Construction of Coolidge Avenue, Harding Road and Hill- side Terrace has been carried on during the past week and the above streets are nearly completed. Surface patches have been made in Adams Street, Allen Streed, Waltham Street, Mass. Avenue, C1arkeStreet and Sylvia Street. Next week the department will be occupied with the construction of various streets and maintenance work. Moth &• Shade Tree Department. The department was occupied with the work of treating moth nests in Wood Street, School Street and Marrett Road and will continue this work next week. Park Department. Besides the regular maintenance work, the department has extended the drainage ditch about 200 ft. The wall under the fence at the Old Belfry has been completed. Water Maintenance Two men have been repairing hydrants, this work in- cluding the hydrant which was hit by an automobile at Pleasant Street. Installed water service for Dykeman on Grapewi3 Avenue. Water Construction. '"Jle have laid approximately 1001 of 12" water pipe in Concord Hill, Sewer Maintenance. lVe have installeda sewer service for Tobin on 67oburn Street. The work contemplated for the week ending November9th is as follows:- Concord Hill water main, sewer and water services, etc. Engineering Department. Sewers. ' Continued work on plan and. profile for Mass. Ami, sexier at Concord Hill. Highways. Line and grade stakes set for construction of Hill Top Avenue. Water. Location given for new hydrants on Mass. Ave. bewteen Summit Avenue and '.food Street. Miscellaneous. Topogr?phical survey in the vicinity of *Hebb Street. Grades stakes set and marl, -ed for new tennis courts at playground. Street line given on Woburn Street at the Leary property. Location of new houses for block plans. Grade stakes narked on Follen Road, at church property.
