A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held at the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building, Sept. 31 1929 at 7:30 P.M. Messrs. Burnham, Chamberlai n, Custance, Blake and Shannon were present. The Supt. of Public Works and the Clerk pro -tem were also present. State Aid State Aid payroll fnriAagust in the amount Payroll. of $25, was signed by the Board. Letter, U.S. Letter was received from the U. S. Veterans' Veterans'. tureau acknowledging receipt of proposal to supply Bureau. water to the U. S. Veterans' Hospital in Bedford. At 8 P.M. hearing was declared open upon the application of Carl A. Thayer, 15 HavIland Street, C. A. Thayer • Boston, for permission to erect a one car garage in application the basement of his dwelling on lot #13 Lincoln for garage. Street. No persons appeared to object and no one was present in favor of the application. It was voted to grant the permit. At 8:05 P.M. hearing was declared open upon Pole location. the application of the New England Tel. & Tel. Co. for pole and wire location at Hancock Avenue and Hancock Street. The Supt. of Public Works informed the Board that the N. E. Tel. & Tel. Co. desired to withdraw this application as there is a pole across the street which can be used. Constable's The Chairman approved the bond of Patrick bond. J. Maguire as Constable of the Town. Letter from Mr. Edwin B. Worthen was read relative to Employer's Liability for the Water Letter re Department. Mr. Worthen stated that the loss was Employer's greater than the premium received on this Depart - Liability. ment and the Supt, of Public Works was requested to bring in at the next meeting a list of accidents for some years past. Water Commitment of water rates in the amount of Commitment. $7013.28 was signed. Shares, E.E.I.Co. Notice was read of a hearing on the petition of the E.E.I.Co. for approval of a change of the par value of the shares from $100 to 25. Notice was received from the Land Court Standpipe relative to the standpipe property in East Property. Lexington, copy of which was sent to the Town Counsel. Previous advice having been received from him relative to the status of this property, no action was taken to contest the petition. I n The matter of appointing a Committee to serve on the Governo'r's Committee on Street and Highway Safety was taken from the table and the Supt. of Public Works was requested to submit a list of persons to serve on this committee at the next meeting of the Board. It was voted to renew Highway Dept. Compensation Insurance of $10,000 expiring Sept. 81 1929 through Jay 0. Richards-. Request was received from David McPeake, Manager of the Town Team that he be granted the use of Cary Memorial Hall on Sept. 19, 1929 at the special rate for a dance. After discussing the matter, the Board voted that he be granted the use of the Hall on this date at one-half the regular charge, this amount being $20. The weekly report of the Supt. of Public Dr. Shannon reported that the inside of Swimming Pool For the week ending August 31, 1929. the large,swimming pool has been painted and re. painting. the small pool looks rather dingy. The weekly report of the Supt. of Public works is as follows: For the week ending August 31, 1929. Highway Department Report of Supt. of Public Works. The Department completed the construction at the corner of Follen Road and Massachusetts Avenue for the time being. Crushed stone and gravel has been applied to the upper part of Locust Avenue. Two catch basins have been constructed in Plainfield Street at the corner of Massa- chusetts Avenue and connected with the main drain in Massachusetts Avenue. ,The street at this ' point has to be graded properly to meet the grade of Massachusetts Avenue and treated with aslphalt. 348 Locust Avenue between Tower Street and Massachusetts Avenue has been graded and treated with asphalt. Street surfaces in Lowell Street and Meriam Street have been patched. It is intended to commence the construction of streets recently accepted by the Town, next week. Moth & Shade Tree Department. The cleaning up of Bowman. Park has been completed. Brush has been cut out at the corner of Lowell Street and Westmddiister Avenue, at Lowell Street and a private way near the reservoir, and at thecorner of Concord Avenue and Blossom Street. A number of dangerous limbs have been removed from a large Elm tree on East Street. The work of cleaning up Belfry Hill has been commenced. Next week the Department will be occupied with regular maintenance work. Park Department. Regular maintagnee work attended to as well as work of grading around the swimming pool. This work will occupy the Department next week. Water Maintenance. We have installed a water service for Charles DeVeau on Grant Street and one for Charles LaPorte on Shade Street. Water Construction. We have laid approximately 5001 of 8" pipe in Vaille Avenue. Sewer Maintenance. We have installed a sewer service for Mr. Charles DeVeau on Grant Street. Sewer Construction. All sewer pipe has been laid in Baker Avenue and Oak Street. Teas men have been working at the swimming pool. The work contemplated for the week ending September 14, 1929 is as follows: water and sewer services, etc. 1 1 349 Engineering Department Sewers. Lines and grades for construction of Baker Avenue. Lines and grades for construction of Taft Avenue. Lines and grades for construction of Oak Street. Computed final bills for lots on Smith Avenue and on Robbins Road. Completed profiles of streets totalling 32,900 feet in length. Highways . Location for new street off Waltham Street. Mis cell aneous. Appointment with Engineer Barnes to sttcdy Ryder development.
