HomeMy WebLinkAbout1929-07-09288 SELECTMENIS MEETING - JULY 9, 192$. The regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held at the'Selectments Office, Town office Building, July 9, 1929 at 7:30 P.M. Messrs. Burnhsam,"Custance, . Chamberlain, Shannon and Blake were present. The Supt. of Public Works and the Clerk were also present. Unlicensed The Board signed the warrant to the Constable to Dogs. destroy all dogs that he found uAlicensed in the Town. The contract of Hill and Delaney was presented to the Board, ready for signature. The contract for the construction of the Swimming Pool was in the sum of $10,954. In addition to this sum, Mr. Custance explained that there were some other items that he estimgted upon, such as the pump bids, which were presented by the Supt. of Public Works, 1 Electrical work and. various other small items which bids have been reouested upon, have not been received as yet. Mr. Custance estimAted these items and felt th:�t they would, come within the appropriation made by the Town for the Swimming Pool, The Board therefore signed the contract of Hill and Delaney, inasmuch as Mr. Custance reported very favorably 'Hill & upon their ability to do concrete construction work. He (Delaney read a letter received from Mr. Sabin of the State Dept. bid, of Public Works, in which he recommended Hill and Delaney for construction work and stated that they had done work for the state. Mr. Custance also stated that be viewed the bridge in Medford construed by them and the work was very satisfactory. He stated that they built a swimming pool in Newton. T'he Supt. of Public Works presented a-list.'of egidp ment in. addition to-,tha_.FIre PumpGvdiich:the CYiaf therFire Department could secure from the American LaFrance Company in their proposal for the Fire Pump. Fire Pump Mr. Blake reported that he looked into the financial condition of the American LaFrance Co. and found that they paid one cent dividend on their shares. He stated that they had been making trucks; they had been losing money in business; also that they intend to change frcm the chain drive system to the gear shift system within the next six months, and he felt that if we nrw purchased a chain drive pump, it will be obsolete within the next six months. It was also understood that the Mack Truck changed from the chain drive and the Board felt that this was evidence that the chain drive system was to be obsolete. Mr. Blake brought up the fact that the City of Boston purchased American LaFrance engines for less money than the proposal to,the Town of Lexington. 1 In view of the cirbumstances, it was decided to lay the matter of purchasing a fire truck on the table for the time being. Inasmuch as the Board intends to install automatic traffic signals at Clarke Street and Elm Avenue, it was decided to move the two beacons; one at Meriam St. and one at Massachusetts Avenue and Clarke Street, Traffic The Supt. reported two other beacons out of Beacons commission and he would move these two beacons to the location where the ones were out of commission. The Supt. of Public Works was requested to see Filling, what could be done about putting some filling in E. Cutter front of the house being built by Ernest Cutter. property. on Follen Road. The Supt. of Public Works was also requested Grass borders to see that the grass borders in the Town were mowed. It was voted to adopt the following sidewalk orders: Bertha M. Pichette 82 & 84 Forest Street John W. & Annie S. McLearn 837 Mass. Avenue Water commitment was signed by the Board in the Commitment amount of $5636.42. Petition signed by the residents of the vicinity of Woburn and Webb Streets was presented to the Board by Mr. Modoono. This petition was in objection Objection, to the noise of the machinery in the Cement Block Burgess block Plant conducted by Mr. Arley A. Burgess at the corner plant. of Woburn and Webb Streets. . The Board decided to go to the premises of Mr. Burgess so that they might judge, for themselves whether or not the noise was troublesome to the neighbors. 290 The members of the Board _agreed _to do this before the meeting on next Tuesday evening. Letter was received.from.Robert L. _Ryder in which he stated that he withdrew his offers Cerusi Road. made in his fetter under date of ._February 12 in regard to layouts made by the Board of Survey. This is in connection with the layout of the street from Massachusetts Avenue along by the Viano property to Vine Brook Road. The Board felt that the pre- liminary work on laying out this street should be done so that the street could be accepted at Town Meeting. Mr. Custanee read a lengthy letter received from Mrs. Virginia Leavitt, 1686 Massachusetts Avenue, in which she made an apology regarding womq of her state- ments relative to removing the tree in front of the Viano garage. She also stated in her letter that a. Mass. Agriculture man informed her that the fungus was nothing but what would come each year and would Viano Tree not be detrimental to the tree; also that the swamp mapli was a little rarer than the ordinary maple, and she regretted exceedingly to lose the tree. She felt, however, that since the tree was removed, that the e7eetric light pole there should also be removed, making easier access to the garage. The weekly report of the Supt. of•Public Works isas follows: For the week ending July 6, 1929. Highway Department. The Department has been occupied with the construction of Bedford Street and Massachusetts Avenue. Crushed stone has been spread from Meriam Street to Elm Avenue and preparation made for application of asphalt: Trench for electric cables connecting traffic signals was excavated. The cables were slid and trench was backElled. Surface patches have been made on Massachusetts Avenue, Vine Brook Road, Highland Avenue, Lowell Street, Clarke Street and Parker Street. A number of catch basins have been cleaned. Next week: the Department will be occupied with the construction of Massachusetts Avenue and necessary maintenance work. Moth and Shade Tree Departments. This Department has removed the tops of several trees on Massachusetts Avenue and Clarke Street, and trimmed trees on Forest Street, Clarke Streeb ard 1 D C� CTI n and on school grounds. Next week the Departmentl4ill be occupied with work of tree trimming and removing brush. Park Department. Regular maintenance work has been carried on and'that work will be continued next week. Water Maintenance. 291 Supt. of Public Works Report. The following water services have been installed: service to new church on Follen Road; service for Dodge, Bertwell Road; service for Robbins & Smith, Smith Avenue. We have been making new taps for houses on Waltham Street; installed renewal for Emery, Stetson Street. Two men have been tieing in shut -offs. Water Construction. We have been digging trench and blasting ledge on Hill Avenue. Sewer Maintenance. We have been making sewer connections to curb on Waltham Street. Installed service for Robbins & Smith on Smith Ave. Brooks. Two men have been working on brooks. The work contemplated for the week ending July 20 is as follows: water and sewer services, etc. Engineering Department Sidewalks. Lines and grades for granolithic construction by Simpson Brothers, Sewers. Record plans made for Smith Avenue and Belfry Terrace. Highways.. Curb grades at Colonial Garage. Miscellaneous.
