Dr. John H. Kane, Town Treasurer, came before the
Board and informed them ibat the Town Collector, Mr.
Earle had teAdered him assistance by letting his clerk
do his work for hitq, and now informs him that he cannot
render him any further assistance. He stRted that he
had not taken a vacation for five years since he has
been here and neither has he b"nrable to complete his
work in the regular hours, and he has worked various
nights. For this reason he asked that he be given some
assistance. At least to take the place of the work
done by Mr. Earle's clerk. Inasmuch as vacations are
now about to take place, the Board felt that the employ-
ment of another clerk for a period of perhaps four,
months would give opportunity to have a clerk wring
the absence of the other clerks on vacations ana render
some assistance to the Town Treasurer.
The Clerk was authorized, therefore, to employ an
additional clerk for this period of time, if the
appropriation for the Board of Selectmen would. render
this service available.
Gauge. Inasmuch as the opening in the Supt. of Public
Works Office for a gauge for the water pressure was
not connected up properly, it was decided to allow the
installation of a gauge on the lower hall wall near the
entrance to the basement.
IT egard to the application of the Lexington
Lumber a maintain a sign 8 x 81 on the south side
of Marrett 'load 3/4 of a mile from Lincoln Street
on the land of William P. Martin, it was decided to Lex. Lumber Co.
let this sign remain and grant permission for its sign.
location.
Mr. Custance reported that Ile had taken up with
Mr. Wnddell's office, Director of Accounts, the subject
of traffic signals and he found that the Act which Mr,
Briggs and Mr. Wrightington referred to did not in any
way affect the installation of traffic signals by the
Town unless they intend to arrange a contract for rental
of the signals. He stated that the Chapter which was in
reference to the Traffic Signals was Chapter 357 of the
Acts of 1928, and under that Chapter the Town had only
to secure the approval of the State of the signals and
locations installed. He, therefore, communicated with
the State House and Mr. Taylor came tq Lexington
and together with Mr. Bills they reviewed the intended
locations of the traffic signals, and he stated
Mr. Taylor was in accord with the locations. Mr..
Custance recommended the use of the traffic signal
installed by Mr. Bills, namely the Tokeim signal.
It was therefore decided to install two traffic
signals at Clarke St., & Massachusetts Avenue, and
one at Elm Avenue at this time.
It was voted to request Mr. Bills to submit a
proposal on traffic signals at Marrett Road & Waltham
Street, Clarke Street and Massachusetts Avenue Ind
Massachusetts Avenue and Elm Avenue at Bedford Street
as laid out by Mr. Taylor and Mr. Custance.
It was decided tocooperate with the Town of
Winchester in renuesting the Edison Company to reduce
their rates charged on four school houses in Lexington,
inasmuch as the present rate allowed is more than rates
allowed to private individuals. The petition to the
Edison Company prepared by the Town of Winchester was
therefore signed by the Boprd.
