A regular meeting df the Board of Selectmen was held at
the Selectmen's office at 7:30 P.Tv'. Yessrs._Burnham, Custance,
Robertson, Chamberlain and. Ballard were present. The Supt.
of Public ':"?oras arld the ClQr?r nro-tem were also present►
Mr. William H. Ballard presented plans of proposed building
at the corner of Vass. Avenue and. i'+Teriam Street, the present to
be remoddlled in accordance with these plans.
Mr. Ballard is to get estimate for moving the present building
bac'- 20 feet to conform to the building line on Vass. Avenue. It
was felt that if the building were set back that Vass. Avenue
could be widened 10 feet.
Letter was received from Elmer A. Lord & Co, stating that the
New. England Insurance rx.change has published a rate of 36� per
x100.00 per year on the Town.of Lexington schedule.
Tr,e Board. signed the order for installation of a sewer in
Ed.gewood Road from Hancoc?r Street a distance of ap^roximately 480 ft.
The Board signed the following commitments;:
Sewer Connections 1177.34
Unapportioned Sewer Assessments 961.70
Nater Charges X1436.17
License was granted to Charles 7. Buxton, 39 Corey St.,
Everett, to operate the pool room,at 434 Mass. Avenue, the
necessary recom-nendations having been received.
Gerald. B. Litchfield, 53 Dexter Road, Lexington was
granted a permit to erect a one car garage at said address,
notice having been received from the Building Inspector recom-
menging that this license be granted.
A t 8:30 P.M. adjourned. hearing was held upon the application
of Eva Furtardo, 38 Theresa Avenge to erect a one car garage at said
address.
No persons appeared for the application.
Mr. & Mrs. James E. Burrell anr±eared to object to the erection
of the garage if it would shut off the light from his ?ritchen
window, his house being three feet from the line. AFr. Burrell stated
that if the garage -fere set bac'- of his 'ritchen window that he
would have no objection.
The matter was lair' on the table until such time as the plan
is presented showing location of the proposed building.
Lette° was received from Dr. 71illiam L. Barnes, School
Physician, asking the Board to authorize the expenditure of Q100.
this year to immunize the school children against diphtheria.
In accordance with his request the Board voted to authorize this
amount, and the School Committee was notified to th^t effect.
Letter was receive$ from the Dept. of Public Utilities
stating that the custoMers of the E. E. I. Co. desire the res-
toration of rate "H" for residential power purposes and that a
hearing will be held in the hearing room of the Dept. of Public

The Supt, of Public "'orbs was i -strutted to attend. the hearing
and. express the opinion of the Board that they desire the restoration

Mr. Harry r,. Ripley, 2 Audubon Road, appeared to request that
the installation of a sewer in Hastings Road of about 7001 be
extended up Mass. Avenue so that he can enter it.
After discussion on the matter, the Board decided to have
NIr. Scamman, Surt. of Public Wor'rs, and. Mr. Ross, Supt. of Sewer
Dept. study the situation and report at the next meeting of the
Board..
Application was received froni Louis "'. Bills, 73 Hancock St.,
for a permit to build a three car garage witch a story above the
garage. It is understood tl^at the story above the garage is to
be used as a wor'- shop.
A sketch of his premises wit- the proposed buildings thereon
was received, but as tYe Board desired nirtrer information on
the matter, it was decided to invite aTr!i.Bills to the next meeting
of the Board.
Letter was received from Mr. Byron C. Earle, Tax Collector
regarding tre matter of sorrier taxes of J. Alexander Wilson and
Asbton Hilgour.
The matter was ta'ren up and it was decided to request the
Supt. of Public '?torus to bring in his recomriend.ation on these taxes.
Letter w?s received from the Supt, of Public `,.'oris stating
that Miss J. E. LeMa,r and Fred. C. Farle have requested abatement of
sewer assessment charged against their properties.
After discussing the matter, the Boars decided to abate the
assessments anl. requested V e hurt. of Public " cr!rs to present the
necessary abatement forms.
Letter was received from Galen A. & 'Marren E. Russe'l'l in
which they aslred that their sewer assessment be abated on Woburn
Street.
The Sunt, of Public '"loris presented a plan showing their
property and he recommended. that 11,000 sq. ft. of land be abated.
The Surt. ^f Public Nor'rs was requested to present a sketch of
the area upon wh,ch the sewer assessment will be abated, at the
next meeting of the Board with the necessary abatement forms.
The suggestion was made teat a card index be started in the
Sewer Depart -hent for sewer frontage abatements so that information
can be had in tLe future as to what lots or parts of tots have been
abated.
Application was received from Louis 12,rshman, 23 Adams St.,
Arlington for permisxion to erect a sign overhanging the sidewalk
at 485 Mass. A -e., tre sign to be 221 x 41 and to weigh about 35 lbs.
It was voted to grant permission to erect this sign provided
Mr. Hirshman signs the agreement that whenever the Board of Selectmen
deem it necessary that all signs of this nature be removed in the
Town, that he will remove his sign.
A specimen form was received from the Toyn of Arlington which
they send out to delinquent water ta'rers.

Mr. Francis Chamberlain reported that he attended the
meeting on November 23, 1928 at tre Selectmen's Office in '
Arlington at which time representatives from the surrounding
towns were invited to discuss the lowering of the gas rate.
The representatives discussed the matter and surCested that
if the Company did. not present a rate agreeable to the towns
that they would. like to employ someone to investigate the :natter.
Before the meeting adjourned., telephone message was
received from the Arlington GQs Light Co. that the rate was
about to be reduced.
Letter was received from Edward 17. Taylor, Chief of the
Fire Dept. in which he stated that the valves which operate
the fire alar,r w'.istle were frozen, and thrt if heat had been
installed, it would not halre har_rened.
Mr. Scamman reported that he hP- conferred. with Mr. Louis .7.
Bills and advised him to install hearing apparatus at once.
It was suggested that the Boar as'- ',fir. Sydney R. "'rightington's
opinion on the matter of re -assessing lots of land abated by the
Selectmen but which may at some future time be improved., and
therefore, benefitted by the installation of a sewer.
Request was received from the Chief of Police that the
Selectmen request the Selectmen of Arlington to grant us the
services of three police officers the night of December 5., ,
1928 at w}ich time a banquet and dance is to be held.

Highway Department.
The following work has been accomplished by the Department
during the past week:
Brook in rear of Hill Street near the Golf Lin' 'z.
and across
to Bedford Street was cleaned. A large boulder in Mood Street which
made the roadway so narrow th:)t two cars could not pass at that
point, was removed and the ban'T at this point was out back.
The Road Grader leveled and graded Vine Street and North
Street. 4800 feet of snow fence was erected. in the outlying
districts.
Next week the Department will be engaged in the construction
of streets recently accented at the Town Meeting.
Moth Department.
This Department was occupied with usual wor'{ of treating '
the gypsy moth nests with creosote above the so-called snow
line on 17estvie•,.,7 St., ;inter St., and Lincoln St., and will
continue this work until it is completed.

This Department was occupj_ed with -;the regular maintenance

The followirn services have been installed.: Fred. Connor,
Marrett Road.; E. �lilliams, Chase A--enue, instilled service for

Street; installed renewals for Custer, Marrett Road, Robinson,
Mass. Ave., Porter, Lowell St; started renewal for Farrington,
71inthrop Road.
Three men have continued to wor'.r on gates.
'Vater Construction.
Drilling and blasting has been done on ':'food Streit
for the Highway Department.
The extension of the Crescent Trill Avenue water main to
the house of piss Bertwell has been stsrted.
Sewer "Taintenance.
I'lle have had some men flushing sewers.
The wor'r contemplated_ fcr the weer- ending December 8 is
as follows: Crescent 11111 Azle., water main; F'astings Road
sewer; water and sewer services, etc.
