Burnham, Custance, Robertson, Chamberlain and Ballard were present. The Supt. of Public 'torus and the Clerk nro-tem were also present Mr. William H. Ballard presented plans of prornsed building at the corner of Wass. Avenue and ivJeriam Street, the present to be remodelled in accordance with these plans . Mr. Ballard is to get estimate for moving the present building back 20 feet to conform to the building line on Mass. Avenue. It was felt that if the building were set back that Mass. Avenue could be widened 10 feet. Letter was received from Elmer A Lord P; Co. stating that the New. England Insurance exchange has published a rate of 36f/ per 100.00 per year on the Town of Lexington schedule. The Boardsigned the order for installation of a sewer in Ed-gewood Road from Hancock Street a distance of ap^roximately 480 ft. The Boar-1 signed the following commitments: : Sewer Connections 31177.34 Unapportioned Sewer Assessments V 961.70 Water Charges 91436.17 License was granted to Charles W. Buxton, 39 Corey St. , Everett, to operate the pool room,at 434 Mass. Avenue, the necessary recommendations having been received. Gerald B. Litchfield, 53 Dexter Road, Lexington was granted a permit to erect a one car garage et said address, notice having been received from the Building Insrector recom- mending that this license be granted. A t 8:30 P.M. adjournedhearing was held upon the application of Eva Furtardo, 38 Theresa Avenue to erect a one car garage at said address. No persons appeared for the application. Mr. & Mrs. Tames E. Burrell anr+eared to object to the erection of the garage if it would shut off the light from his kitchen window, his house being three feet from the line. Mr. Burrell stated that if the gArage ere set back of his 1r-itchen win9ow that he would have no objection. The matter was lair on the table until such time as the plan is presented showing location of the proposed building. Lette was received from Dr. llilliam L. Barnes, School Physician, asking the Boardto authorize the expenditure of 41100. this year to immunize the school children against diphtheria. In accordance with his request the Board voted to authorize this amount, and the School Committee was notified to th^ t effect. Letter cans received from the Dept. of Public Utilities stating that the custo'ers of the E. E. I. Co. desire the res- toration of rate "H" for residential power purposes and that a hearing will be held in the hearing room of the Dept. of Public Utilities , 166 State House , Boston, on Tuesday, December 4 455 at 10 30 A.M. The Supt. of Public ors was i strutted to attend the hearing and express the opinion of the Board that they desire the restoration of rate "H". Mr. Harry M. Ripley, 2 Audubon Road, appeared to request that the installation of a sewer in Hastings Road of about 7001 be extended up Mass. Avenue so that he can enter it. After diseussior on the matter, the Board decided to have Mr Scamman, Surt. of Public Wor'rs, and Mr. Ross , Supt. of Sewer Dept. study the situation and report at the next meeting of the Board. Application was received from Louis "T. Bids , 73 Hancock St. , for a permit to build a three car garage with a story above the garage. It is understood that the story above the garage is to he used as a wor'- shop A sketch of his premises with the proposed buildings thereon was received, but as the Board desired further information on the matter, it was decided to invite 71..5 Bills to the next meeting of the Board. Letter was received from Mr. Byron C. Eerie , Tax Collector regarding the matter of sewer taxes of J. Alexander Wilson and Ashton ailgour. The matter was ta'ren up and it was decided to request the Supt of Publir- Works to bring in his recommendation on these taxes. Letter was received from the Supt. of Public ,`.'orks stating that Miss J. E. LeMaz, and Fred C. Earle have requested abatement of sewer assessment charged against their properties. After discussing the matter, the Board decided to abate the assessments and requested the curt. of Public "'oras to present the necessary abatement forms . Letter was received from Galen A. & 7arren E. Russe'l'l in which they asked th' t their sewer assessment be abated on Woburn Street. The Sunt. of Public 'n nor'- d u s presented a plan showing their property and he recommended that 11,000 sq. ft. of land be abated. The Supt. ^f Public "loris was requested to present a sketch of the area upon which the sewer assessment will be abated, at the next meeting of the Board with the necessary abatement forms . The suggestion was made that a card index be started in the Sewer Department for sewer frontage abatements so that information can be had in the future as to what lots or parts of lots have been abated. Application was received from Louis H,rshman, 23 Adams St. , Arlington for permission to erect a sign overhanging the sidewalk at 485 Mass. Ave. , the sign to be 22 ' x 41 and to weigh about 35 lbs . It was voted to grant permission to erect this sign provided Mr. Hirshman signs the agreement that whenever the Board of Selectmen deem it necessary thst all signs of th; s nature be removed in the Town, that he will remove his sign. Mr. Francis Chamberlain reported that he attended the meeting on November 23, 1928 at the Selectcen' s Office in &rlington at w'^ich time representatives from the surrounding towns were invited to discuss the lowering of the gas rate. The representatives discussed the matter and sugmested that if the Company did not present a rate agreeable to the towns that they would like to emplo someone to investigate the matter. Before the meeting adjourned, telephone message was received from the Arlington GPs Light Co. that the rate was about to be reduced. Letter was received from Edward T. Taylor, Chief of the Fire Dept. in which he stated that the valves which onerate the ''ire alarm w' istle were frozen, and that if' heat hal been installed, it would not have harnened. Yr. Scamman reported that he hP, conferred with Mr. Louis "T. Bills and advised him to install hea:iing arr+aratus at once. It '^✓as suggested that t''-e Boars as'' `fir. Sydney R. 'rightington' s opinion on the matter of re-assessing lots of land abated by the Selectmen but which may at some future time be improved, and therefore, benefitted by the installation of a sewer. Request was received from the Chief of Police that the Selectmen request the Selectmen of Arlington to grant us the services of three rolice officers the night of December 5, 1328 at w' ich time a banquet and dance is to be held. The weekly report of the Supt . of Public 'Noris is as follows : For weer ending November 24, 1928. Highway Denartment . The following work has been accomplished by the Department during the past week Brook in rear of Hill Street near the Golf Links and across to Bedford Street was cleaned. A large boulder in Wood Street which made the roadwPy so narrow trot two cars could not pass at that point, was removed and the ban'r at this point was cut back. The Road Grader leveled and graded Vine Street and 'iQrth Street. 4800 feet of snow fence was erected in the outlying districts. Next week the Department will be engaged in the construction of streets recently accented at the Town Meeting. Moth Department. This Department was occupied with usual wor'r of treating the gypsy moth nests with creosote , above the so-called snow line on Westview Ct. , ,;inter St. , and Lincoln St. , and will continue this work until it is completed. 457 Par' Department. This Department was occuni-ed with the regular maintenance work. Water 'Maintenance. The following services have been installed. Fred. Connor Marrett Road; E. Williams , Chase I enue , installed service for 7oodford , Bedford S+. , started service for Sheldon, Meriare Street; installed renewals for Custer, Marrett Road, Robinson, Mass Ave. , porter, Lowell Ct; started renewal for Farrington, Winthrop Road. Three men have cont-i.nued to wor'r on gates. :later Construction. Drilling and blasting has been done on 'fond Stre =t for the Highway Department. The extension of the Crescent T;il1 Avenue water main to the house of Miss Bertwell has been started. Sewer "aintena,nce. e have had some men flushing sewers .
