A special meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held at the
Selectmen ' s ' oom on November 9, 1928 at 7 30 P.M. , to hear all
parties interested in the laying out of Baker Avenue, Bennett
Avenue , Butler Avenue an Chase Avenue . Messrs . Burntiam, Ballard
Chamberlain , Custance and Robertson were present. The Supt. of
Public Works , i1liam S. Scamman, the Assistant Town Engineer,
Stanly A. Higgins , and. the Clerk pro-tem were also present.
At 7 30 P.M. the hearing was declared open with about 25
persons present.
Mr . Francis J. Toye of 3 Imes Avenue was present and although
he does not own property on any of the said streets, he was
interested to know why the cost of 3.00 and $3.50 per,foot was
more than that when carville Avenue was constructed. "e also
stated that Bennett Avenue should not be laid out as the
abuttors were not interested to have it accepted.
Mr. Clarence E. MacPhee wtated that no ledge was encountered.
on Baker Avenue wen water pipe was laid, and he felt that the
item of ledge Was high on acuount of this fact. Ho was informed
by Mr. T. A. Custance that the figures presented wore merely
an estimate of the work, and. were high enough to include any
ledge that might be found. He also stated that if the actual cost
of the work did not come up to the estimate that the abuttors assess-
ment would be less than the 7stimate .
Mr. Joseph L. Dahlstrom, 48 Chase Avenue, stated that he
thougb.t the cost pr foot was too high as he would not be benefitted
enough, by the acceptance of the street, he thought, to warrant
his signing for the estimated assessment.
r'rr . Malcolm E. Clifford , 83 Chase t-venue , suggested that that
part of Chase Avenue beyong Bennett Avenue that part of Baker
Avenue beyond Butler Avenue,&thnt part of B /1. ett Avenue from Chase
Avenue to 2arvell Avenue he left out of estimate.
Mrs. bertha J. Cook, 15 Butler Avenue, did not want Butler Avenue
accepted as she thinks the street is in go-d condition now.
Mrs Rose 'aloney, Baker Av rue, woul like to have Butler
Avenue accepted if the cost is not too high.
Mr. 'rank Berry, Butler Avenue, could not be present, but he
informed. rar . MacPhee that le would lilTe to have Butler Alfenue accepted .
After hearing all parties interested the hearing was adjounned for
one week,, November 16, 1928 at 7 30 P.M. , at which time estimates will
be presented on the streets , omitting the parts that the abuttors
suFgested be left out .
The meeting adjourned at 8 : 30 P.M.

mr. .-dherman or 'fietealf & Eddy met with the Boar-7 at 8 P.M.
to consult with them in regard to the recommendations concerning
improvements of tie 'ter or1s of the Town .
Toget, or they went over the recom-endations made for re-
inforcements to the system taking un each item in succession.
Mr. Sherman was asked his opinion as to the laying of a 12"
main in Massachusetts Avenue and Bedford Street between Waltham
Street and Elm Avenue for the first job in preference to
starting at the end of the 12" pipe opposite the High School,
and he stated that he thought it was a good thing to do as it
would tend to strengthen the line in Bedford Street north.
The Board passed an order instructing the Supt. of Public
"o1-0,-s to proceed with laying a 12" main in Massachusetts Avenue
and Bedford Street between '5aTtleam Street and Elm Avenue, in
accordance with the recommendations made in the renort made by
Metcalf & Edda dated. October 3, 1928 with the necessar- fittings .
The Supt . of Public "PDrks was also instructed to confer with
the Water Department of Arlington and the Metropolitan Commission
in regard to the opening of the six inch gate in 'Vestminister
Avenue, which is now considered as an emergency sunply, re-
placing the present meter with a four inch Detector Meter in
accordance with their recommendatien number 1 on nage 12 of the
report, ant' to tale up recom ednati-n 2 and renort whPt con-
nections have been made, and also recommendation number 3.
Also to hove the Engineering Department gather all information
available in regard to pessible land developments and those under
way in order that the Boar ' co id give further consideration to
recommendations numberd4 and 5.
The matter of unpaid, water bills was considered. A report
and recommendation is desired from the aupt . of Public 7orks in
regard to this matter.
The Board arranged a conference with the committee on investi-
gRtion of the Fire Department or Friday evening , November 16, 1928
at 8 15 P.m.
