HomeMy WebLinkAbout1982-11-01-LYC-min.pdf 4 RECEIVED z V /J ( s') pr....r LEXINGTON YOUTH COMMISSION Minutes of the Meeting of November 1 , 1982 Present Ron Wells, Nancy Barter, John McGirr, Dan Murphy Students Amy Dockser, Davida Zelinsky, Laura Rubin Absent Ron Marble The meeting was open at 7 30 P.M by Ron Wells All minutes were approved as read - no corrections or additions were needed • Laura Rubin was welcomed to the L Y C Old Business Amy responded on Friday night Football garie 2500 people attended Julie and Amy felt the game was very successful John McGirr will contact Recreation Committee member Bart Carr for his input on lighted ballfields A letter will be drafted to the Recreation Department in support to work with the committee if needed ' ! New Business John McGirr and Nancy will meet with Bob Davenport November 5 at Lexington High School to go over student Government Day and find out if there is a student interest and staff to work on this project •• John McGirr then reported on Project Base (Basic Alcohol Safety Education) , a project which started in Brookline This is a way of working alcohol abuse into the • classroom John feels this could be also approached to the Junior High Schools • Maggie Debbie (councellor at Lexington High School ) is coordinating this project Amy volunteered to send for brochure and speaker fees in Waltham - Alcoholic Training Center Open discussion was then open on an Alcoholic/Suicide Abuse Program which then continued into a lengthy discussion by all members Ron Wells reported on a meeting he attended "Providers Club" A grouplof many individuals from different organizations met and went over the services they provided in town and discussed coming and going events taken place This gives everyone a chance to know what each group is doing Ron stated A Basic Directory will be formed, and the group will meet quarterly to air out views Ron will bring a student from L Y C with him to the next meeting He felt this to be a very useful meeting Ron Wells then brought up Woburn Council of Social Concern, Inc, an emergency shelter for youth If any member knows of a host family who would be interested, Ron told everyone to call 720-7229 Nancy mentioned that this was also in the P T.A Council newsletter Ron then read a letter from the Selectmen on a letter they forwarded to us from Senator Campbell , from Hawaii Discussion was open to members after the letter was reviewed Ron wanted to know what we thought of our involvement in this project After careful consideration everyone felt Lexington has so much to offer youths in need that we plan to send a letter to Senator Campbellenclosing brochures from Mystic Valley and Replace The committee felt it was not ready to get committed to this project at this time A letter will be drafted back to the Selectmen explaining this Amy mentioned that Lexington High School has a Health Education program on Drugs/ Suicide and Alcohol Abuse A small group of students (20) are attending Julie reported on the Walk-A-thon $17,000 was reported and much coverage from cable, TV and the Minuteman was involved in the project The Rotary Club sponsonsored the Haunted House and proceeds of $2 ,000 were also donated to the Charley Davidson Memorial Fund Julye felt it was a very rewarding experience for her Good work, Julie! Next meeting (Note place) November 16, Room 111 7 30 P.M December 7, Room G-15 7 30 P.M (downstairs) December 21 , Room G-15 7 30 P.M (downstairs) Next agenda John and Nancy report on Student Government Day John will report on Recreation Committee (Bart Carr's conversation) Ron Wells will report on when the budget is due (ideas) Amy - meeting with Mrs Sidman at Lexington High School on slide presentation on Alcohol Suicide Abuse and letter received from Waltham - fee for speaker and information on Training Center Meeting was adjourned at 9 15 P M Respectfully submitted, Nancy L Barter Secretary
