1 The minutes from the last meeting were reviewed and approved as amended below.
The "Nusbit" article in point #10 should have been "Musket" article
2 Ron Wells summarized the Selectmen's review of our program
Lots of support Three of the Selectmen are former Youth Commission members
The fact that we were reasonably prepared greatly enhances our chances
to get things done
3 Forrest outlined the Youth Recognition Award Program
This is the fourth year of the program. It began after Lexington
won the State basketball championships and the Selectmen wanted a
way to better recognize youth
The Selection Committee consists of representatives from the major
town organizations including
Fire Department League of Women Voters
High School PTA
Town Meeting Newspaper
Youth Commission Gridiron Club
Chamber of Commerce Lions Club
The selection process follows a set format
The criteria is "outstanding" youth in Lexington
3 to 5 are normally selected each year
The award is given on Patriots Day just before the White Tr-icon award
Any youth who either lives in Lexington or goes to school in Lexington is
eligible
An announcement asking for nominations is made in the Minuteman
Historically, 12 to 24 names have been submitted, most from High School
teachers
The Selection Committee then sends each youth nominated a resume blank
to be completed No one has ever failed to complete the form
The youth's names are removed from the resumes and the resumes are
given a 1-10 score by each member of the committee
Usually there is a clean break between the top candidates and the others
At this point the names of the candidates are given and the committee makes
its final decision
The cost of the program should be about $150
4 We voted unanimously to support the Youth Awards again this year and thanked
Forrest for again chairing the Selection Committee Also,
John McGirr and Ron Marble will be our representatives
Forrest should submit invoices for all costs incurred to Bea
Forrest will probably not want to chair the committee again next year
We suggested he begin to "groom" a replacement
Nancy will discuss the possibility of an award to Danny Murphy at one
of the Selection Committee meetings
Forrest has scheduled the first meeting on February 11 Bea will arrange
appropriate announcements
5 We discussed the status of the Drug Education Night P R
Diane and Mary-Ellen have done 10 great-looking posters They will take
charge of putting them up in the High School and Junior Highs the
Thursday before the program
Diane, Mary-Ellen and Jim reported that they had arranged church
announcements of the program
Nancy has contacted the League of Women Voters, PTA, and the Minuteman - Ron said
he had received a call already from Marsha Williamson of the Minuteman
6 John presented a final draft of the Drug Program questionnaire that was 'ell
received
We suggested that he leave space for additional comments
We estimated that200 copies should be enough
Mary-Ellen and Diane will make a box for the questionnaires
7 Bea suggested we invite Replace personnel to come to the program and to encourage
attendance Ron Wells will talk to Bill Blout at Replace
8 Nancy's "get-together" has been postponed until February
9 Jim reviewed his list of Town Meeting issues that could affect youth
$10,000 increase for Replace
$10,000 decrease for Mystic Valley budget
Level Lexpress budget
$60,000 for all weather track
$10,000 to scrape bottom of Old Res

Bea suggested we might want to contact Scott Bock at Mystic Valley
