HomeMy WebLinkAbout1980-SSCC-rpt.pdf Under Article 31 of the 1979 Annual Town Meeting it was voted that the
Selectmen consider the use of the Munroe School, or some part of it, as a
senior citizens' center The Board of Selectmen assigned this task to the
School Sites Conversion Committee (S S C C ) On Sept 11, 1979 the Committee
met with the residents of the Munroe neighborhood The residents were re-
ceptive to the idea of converting the school to a senior or human services
center They did ask that the playground remain intact for continued use by
the neighborhood
In October, the School Sites Conversion Committee recommended to the
Selectmen that Munroe be converted to a human services center The seniors
would occupy part of the building Other compatible tenants would occupy
the rest of the space Several groups have approached the Town about space
in such a center
After the Selectmen approved the SSCC's recommendation, the architec-
tural firm of Hammer Kiefer and Todd was awarded the bid to prepare a
feasability study on the conversion of the Munroe School to a human service
center Their report indicated it would cost a minimum of approximately
$520, 000 to bring the building up to code (architectural barriers code, energy
code, mechanical and electrical codes) This figure would not include
interior renovations or amenities such as carpeting, partitions, new ceilings,
and air conditioning Tenants would be obliged to make their own interior
changes if such a plan were adopted The cost to do the total renovation would
be $777 000 A middle ground figure, with some interior amenities is $620,000
Before going forward with a large capital expense, the Selectmen have
recommended under Article 33 of 1980 that $7500 be appropriated to do a
needs assessment for a Senior Citizens center The study will also determine
the suitability of Munroe School and Muzze- Junior High for such a facility
