MEETING,MARCH 25 , 1924 .
II
A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen wan held in
the Selectmen' s Room, Town Hall , Lexington, on Tuesday, March 25 ,
1924 , at 8 00 P. M. The following members of the Board were present,
namely . Messrs . Burnham, Hutchinson, :uioulton, Custance and Miles .
The Town Counsel and Aes't Town Clerk were also present.
The following men were drawn as Jurors ; William Kendall ,
Bedford St, William A. Sandison, 217 Bedford Street , George H .
Jackeon , 34 Parker Street .
Hearing WaP declared open upon the application of William A.
Granfield of 62 Palmer St. Arlington, for permission to erect and
maintain a gasoline station at the corner of Spring and Middle
1 Streets .
Mr. Granfield appeared for his petition and no one appeared
against the petition.
After discussing the matter the Board unanimously voted
not to grant the license .
The following special police were appointed. #
IIThe case of Mildred Foley of 91 Butler Avenue , having been
called to the attention of the Board by the Clerk, the Board voted
to allow Mrs . Foley $8 per week and Rent , $16 .13 per month, and the
abatement of her water bill.
Mrs . Foley' a husband was committed to jail on March 17th
for six months for assault on a 14 year old girl . They are paying
for a home to the Arlington Cooperative bank. Mrs Foley is about
to be confined in June and is unable to earn any money on account
of caring for her three children.
Report was received from the Chief of Police regarding
the sign calling attention to school children which the Board asked
him to investigate . The Chief advised the Board that he had an
, officer stationed at Clarke Street during the time that children
were let out from school except when the officer was called away
on an emergency. He thought a sign might be placed near Meriam
Street.
The Board decided to leave this matter to the Supt . of
Public Works.

The Chief of Police reported that he wan invePtigating the , r
case of Juetine Shea, occupant of the building at 119 Maes . Avenue
for the etorage of care , and would report later .
! The application for a gasoline filling station at corner of
Mane . Avenue and Follen toad from Joseph B. Lowell . was laid on the
table for another week at Mr. Lowell' s request .
In regard to the application of John B . Lovell for permission
to run a jitney bue line in Lexington along the State Road the Board
decided to inform Mr . Lovell that they rather favored his proposition
of running bueeen and aeked that he get in touch with Arlington and
Lincoln to pee what their attitude would be about granting him a
license .
After consultation with kr. Paul of the Buffalo-Springfield
Roller Oo . of Springfield, Ohio . the Board voted tourchase a new
29 ,000 lb road roller and scarifier , for the sum of p$5990 , with an
allowance for the old roller and scarifier making the sum of $5152.F0
the cost of the new roller to the town.
H delegation of three men from the vicinity of Reed St .
North Lexington, headed by Leonard Jellie of Hard Street came before
the Board with the request that the Board fix up the farther end of
Reed Street. He stated that the etreet her been accepted for twenty-
four yearn and they felt that something ehould be done an they have
requested it for a number of yearn and did not get anything of a
permanent nature done . The Board informed them that last year
some work was done up there but they could not promise any work of
a permanent nature would be done an the appropriation was not large
enough.
The Board requested them to come before the Finance Com-
mittee next year and etate their care and perhaps an additional
appropriation could be made for thin work .
It wap voted 'to appoint John F. Tibbetts Building Inspector
of the Town eo that he could assume hie duties on April let , and
his appointment would then be confirmed on April let , at the Board' s
meeting.
The Town Treasurer was authorized to borrow $175 .000 on
temporary loan.
Insurance policy to the amount of $2700 on Shelalee house in
the cemetery war approved by the Board.
The bond of the Town Llerk wan approved but the bond of
the Town Treasurer wan returned to the Treaeurer that he might get
the form of bond originally ueed.
Letter wac received from William S . Seaman . in which he
accepted the position of Supt. of Public Yorks of the town of
Lexington.
Request way received from the Anthony-hunt-hamilton Port
dt Bedford asking permission to etretch a canvass or pennant

acrone the streets leading from Lexington to Bedford on
r.pril 19th .
Mir . Loomin writer of the letter Wan requested t , give
further information eo that our Supt . of Public Workr could take
the matter up with him.
Edwin B . Worthen war authorized to renew insurance on eteam
roller expiring; npril 9th and also on 1522 one ton truck of the
Highway Department . ler . 'Aorthen wan informed that both of these
vehicle', were to be renewed by the department.
In regard to the letter of the division of Fisheries and
Game , State louse , with reference to appointing game warden for
the town, in which they etate that kr . Spencer wan dropped by
them owing to the fact that he wan not actively aeeieting their
wardens , the Board submitted the following list of names from
which they might chose a warden

Letter wan received from Frederick L. Emery, 50 Congress St.
in which he called attention to the fact that the electric care
standing at the corner of 'ealtham St . block traffic at thin
point and asked if arrangemente could not be made whereby the
care would atop 200 feet from Mare . neve. or opposite Muzzey St .
The Board informed ser . Lmiry that the matter would be referred
to the Supt. of Public "orke for hie attention .
Letter wan received from E . W . b actin , 33 Fo11l11 Road , in
which he made complaint of the catch berin on the south ride of
Follen Road which draina into and floods hie land.
It wan voted to leave thin matter to the Supt. of Public
'ri orkn.
Letter was received from Ire . Mary G Mullen of 53 Mann . Ave,
Lex .ngton, ir which she requested a sign to be placed in front
of her premieee , "The Rent" eimilar to the sign at the Russell
House or Breck Robinson Lureery Co .
The Board decided to leave thin matter to the Supt . of
Public Works.
Letter was received from the Town Engineer informing the
Board that cement lined wrought iron service pipe in far superior
to the lead, lead-lined and galvanized wrought iron pipe now used
for service connectione in the water department, and recommends
the came for service connectione to be made in the future .
The Town egnineer submitted estimate and sketch of the work
proposed to be done at the corner of Tlorth leancock and Bedford
Streete for the Lexington Building Truet. The estimate of the
work ie .$500 .
The Boerd thereupon turned the matter over to the Supt .
of Public idorkE eo that he may endeavor to see if the work could

the Town Engineer submitted estimate of the cost of
extending the sewer in Vine Brook Road ae $1175 .00. This
estimate included the extension of the sewer in the entire
street.
This matter was laid on the table for the present .
John H. Sawyer of 7 Fern St. war authorized to continue
taking care of the park at the corner of Pollen Road and Pleasant
Street at the rate of $25 per season.

To Engineer whereby Letter was received from the he informed
the Board that he felt the Zoning By-Law, if approved, would do
away with several of the bill-boards now on hand .
He also felt that the Board should object to the appli-
cations for signs at Bedford Street at smith' s Filling Station and
at the State Road on the road to Concord, owing to the fact that
there are sufficient signs of this nature in the vicinity .
Francis J . Toye , Clarence MacPhee , Frank J . McCue and
Herbert A. Flint , of the Liberty Heights section came before the
Board in reference to having the streets in their section accepted
under the betterment act . They stated that they had Mr . Harrison
get them some figures as to the cost of the work which would be
$3150.
Mr . Stone was requested to look into the matter of better-
ment assessments , and the gentlemen were informed that the
matter would be taken up with the Supt. of Public (forks.
Norman Hooper cane before the Board to offer the Board
hir qualifications for the position of Town Engineer.
Mr. Hooper ie a graduate of the University of Vermont with
a B S. degree in 1912 . he stated hislexperience in other places
and tht he ie now with the State Highway commisnion as an assist-
ant engineer . He aleo had come experience in the County and
felt that he was qualified for the position as a whole .
The Board informed him that they would take the matter under
advisement.
The resignation of J . Henry Duffy as Town Engineer was accepted
with much regret . qtr . Duffy came before the Board and asked that
he be released from his duties as soon as possible so that he might
take up hie position with the New England Fire Underwtiters .
The Board finally agreed to release Mr . :Duffy on April 19th.
In regard to the Inspector of Slaughtering whose appoint-
ment given out on March 31st , 1924 .
Mr. Stone was requested to find gut whether or not licensee
should be granted to the two slaughterers that had them last yearp
and if no just how the Board should go about the tter in town
meeting, and if they should appoint a Slaughter f or one year.
The Board voted to grant John T . Coegroire , Ase 't Town Engineer Ae
an increase in pay from $30 per week to $35 per week dating from
Lurch 22, 1924 .
The Board voted to grant an increase in pay to Helen C .
Gallagher of $100 per year to date from 4pril 1 .t , 1924 .
