HEARILG, I•"sOVP.c, ri;:R 23, 1923. I
Hearing was called as advertised in the Lexington Minute-
man and Lexington Times at E P. L. upon the petition of the
Middlesex & Boston St. Rwy Uompany for a license to operate motor
vehicles upon public ways in the Town of Lexington for the carrying
of passerfgere for hire.
Mr. Drew told his story to the meeting, which was substantially
in accordance with what he had told the selectmen at their meeting
November 13, 1923.
Mr. Drew gave figures showing the condition of the companies'
finances, and had the books of the company ready to show to anyone
d4eiring to see them. He explained that the Middlesex Sc Boston
intended to atop all car service on January let, anyway, whether
they were given the privilege of running busses or not. He told
the people that they had been losing money on this line and could
not afford to keep same any longer.
Mr, Drew was asked questions by some of the citizens in
regard to the service and the proposed bue service.
Ur. Bayley argued with Ur. Drew in regard to certain phases
of the situation. kr. Bayley then read some long regulations which
he felt the Board of Selectmen should pass before a permit is
granted to the Middlesex & Boston. Fie also suggested that there
may be other companies interested in the proposition of running
buseee in the town and for that reason the Board would not neceee-
arily have to grant permission to the Middlesex 1." St. Rwy
Co.
After considerable dieauesion Mrs. Clarence E. Sprague moved
that a vote of confidence be given to the Board of selectmen in
their judgment.
The hearing adjourned at 11:50 P.1-:.
