The meeting was called to order by Mary at 7;42 pm. She reported that Mrs . Friedman had expected that involvement in the Community Volunteer Program be on an individual basis, and not for the Commission as a whole. At the meeting with the Board of Selectmen on October 27, Mr. O'connell proposed that we take a more active part in the Youth Employment Service. He will gather some information and will get back to Mary. We discussed the possibilities of pursueing this project, we could hire help (paid or volunteer) to maintain an office where the names of students seeking work and organizations with job openings would be filed, similar to one in California which Mary Anderson helped organize. A job placement center might be organized in conjunction with Max-Ed. We could publish a booklet, perhaps as appart of the Youth Directory, with information on jobs, wages, and requirements When more information is received from Mr O'connell, we will set up a subcommittee, hopefully composed of interested people outside of the Y C to investigate employment services . Another topic discussed was sharing ideas on Youth related issues with other organizations One such group is the Youth Caucus started by the first Parish Church. The Commission seemed in general agreement that we contact other Youth Commissions of neighboring towns to communicate with them and find out what they are doing and how they work Mr Miller and. Sue Abkowitz will try to start a flow of information with other towns Steve Politi proposed that we conduct panel discussions, a speakers bureau, and get speakers on Youth 'related topics Alan Wachman sugested, that we send a town official or police officer to the schools to talk on student rights, this would be a type of seminar to increase awareness. Alan and Nancy will investigate this topic and get other students interested and report to the Commission next time. Mary reported that Cindy Lescalleet, a journalism student is interested in being the editor for the Youth Calendar, It was voted unanimously that Cindy attend our next meeting. Throughout the meeting, Alan pointed out that we were "spreading ourselves too thin" that is undertaking too many and too varied projects The Commission agreed that we should initiate the projects and do the preliminary work, but then interested people from outside the Y C should continue the work. Due to the small attendance we were unable to work in subcommittees The following heads of committees were appointed and are responsible for calling a subcommittee meeting in the coming week.
