HomeMy WebLinkAbout1923-02-1316 c MEETING, FEB. 13, 1923. ' Messrs. Seaman, Blake and Burnham Present. In place of Lester R. Redman, resigned. from the April 19th Committee, Ezra F. Breed was appointed. Mr. Neil McIntosh came before the Board with a plan which was revised in a compromise between Mr. Duffy'a plan* and his own. Mr. McIntosh was requested to leave the plan until the Board considered same and they would let him know their decision at a later date. In regard to the appointment of Mr. Toys as Registrar of Voters, the Board decided to get the opinion of the Town Counsel as to whether or not he is eligible. Letter was received from Edwin A. Bayley giving his opinion that the By -Laws were legally published in the Lexington Minute - Man. He also suggested that if there was any doubt in the minds of the Selectmen that this was true that articles be inserted in the Warrant for the annual meeting which would clear up the situation. He also suggested the articles for the warrant. The Board requested the town counsel's opinion as to whether or not the articles presented by Mr. Bayley in his letter will clear up the situation, and request that he draw one that will so far as possible if these do not. Two applications for advertising signs were received. The Clerk was directed to turn the same over to Mr. Duffy for his ad- vice on same. Notice was received from Chief of Police, Edward Leavitt, in which he inform -el the Board that Edward C. Maguire was absent from duty owing to an operation for appendicitis. In this con- nection the Board found that the reguletions adopted at the meet- ing allowed one half pay for patrolmen on account of illness. The Board therefor notified Mr. Leavitt that Mr. Maguire should re- ceive pelf pay during his illness. Letter was received from the Chief of the Fire Department in which he enclosed copy of letter sent to the Chairman of the School Department asking that certain changes be made at the Old Adams School building to make the building safe for occupancy. The Board acknowledged receipt of letter and also wrote a let- ter to the School Department in which they requested that the changes suggested be made. Letter was received from Francis H. Allen of Ho,aghton Mifflin Co. asking for permission to reproduce in photogravure the por- trait of Earl Percy in the Cary Memorial Library in a book to be 1 1 17 called "The Battle of Lexington". The Clerk was requested to get the opinion of the. Librarian before granting permission. ' Letter was received from F. L. Amery, Pres. of Field and Garden Club in which he asked the opinion of the Board on whether or not they would suggest widening Mass. Ave. between Hunt Block and Boutelle Block fifteen feet. The Board replied that they did not think this the proper thing to do at this time inasmuch as Mass. Avenue for any great distance will not be widened for sometime to come. The Board voted to approve the regulations of the Police Depart- ment which were submitted to the Board sometime ago by Acting Chief Patrick J. Maguire. Letter was received from the Supt. of Public Works asking for authority to purchase desk signs to be placed on desks so that per- sons coming into the office could locate the official they desired. He also recommended a settee for the use of persons desiring to wait. Mr. Blake stated that he wo,ild send out a settee from his office for temporary use. The Supt. of Public Works stated the he would have to bill the Boston & Maine RR Co. for plowing out their drive since they would not abate the bill of $36 for rental of land. The Supt. of Public Works presented a form of license that Mr. Custance is to have in order that he may make newer connections in 1 the town, thereby relievir�; the department of doing that sort of work. The Supt. reported th4t a party is to move into the Hakes house the first of the month, and water will have tc be furi.islied to them. He stated that the pipes in the trench were not laid in accore. with the original agreement. Mr. Harrison was reminded that this matter was left with him to attend to last week. The Supt, reported that Mr. Ryder sent him a cop; of form letter to be sent out on sewer connections. The Chief of Police came before the Board with a request that the Police Station be painted and that he be allowed the use of the room now used for a women's lock-up for a privateoffice, The Chairman informed him that he would get two of the local painters to bid on the painting. The Board also granted the Chief the use of the inner room for a private office. The Chief also requested that a Ford car be purchased for the department. This will be taken up with the Appropriation Committee. The Chief informed the Board of slight changes he was making in the department. A true record, Attest; CLERK.
