HomeMy WebLinkAbout1922-09-19MEETING, SEPTEMBER 19, 1922. All Members Present. The bond of Arthur W. Hatch temporary Town Treasurer for the balance of the -term was approved by the Chairman, said bond being for $20,000. A letter was received from Edward D. Sawyer of Hayes Avenue com- plaining of the condition of Hayes Avenue and stating that if the Board had no objection he would repair his drivewayentrance at his own expense. The Board replied that they had no objection to his fix- ing the driveway provided it was done with the approval of the Town Engineer. Application for a gasoline filling station to be located at the corner of Lowell and Woburn Streets was received from Howard M. Munroe and H. Irving.Currier. It was decided to give a hearing on Oct. 3rd at 8 o'clock P. M. on this application. In connection with,the construction of Maple Street the follow- ing vote was passed. "Voted: That the Gas Company have tentative permission to begin putting in a main on Maple Street provided it is agreeable to and subject to the approval of Mr. O'Connell, the contractor, the State Highway Representative and the Town Engineer, it being understood that the Gas Company assume all responsibility of getting the full consent of Mr. O'Connell and not to delay his work nor increase the cost of road construction, and that the Gas Company will file a for- mal petition within one week. A letter was received from F. Scott Woodruff calling attention to the condition of Somerset Road at the junction of Meriam Street, and asking that something be done to avoid accidents at that point. The Board replied that they had turned the matter over to the Supt. of Streets and that if there is any possibility after the completion of Bedford Street they will endeavor to fix up the street. In regard to the application of Mr. Ribok to construct a. bulk- head in the sidewalk at his new block on Maas. Avenue. The recom- mendation of the Town Engineer in which he informed the Board that other towns were reluctant to granting permits of this sort was considered, and -the board therefor decided to lay the matter on the table. Notice was received from the County Commissioners in which they gave the award of damages for the reconstruction of Lowell and Maple Streets. Notice was received also from the CountyCommissioners stating that a hearing would be held on the petition for repairs and relo- cation of Bedford Street at the Court House,East Cambridge, Mass., Oct. 20th at 10 o'clock in the forenoon. Letter was received from Francis .Batchelder of Vehant commending the -board on the choige of Mayor Harrison as Supt. of Public Works in Lexington. Permission was granted to the Lexington Gas Company to excavate 164 at #26 Parker Street for the purpose of installing gas service. ear. Charles E. Hadley and Son Earle, Building Inspector, and ' Theodore A. Custance came before the Board to discuss the matter of alterations on the building of said Hadley. Mr. Custance in the absence of the -building Inspector gave a verbal permit to Mr. Hadley to tear down a chimney. Mr. Hadley then made other alterations on the building with the intent of making part of the house into a store. Upon Mr. Wadman's return from his vacation he found that Mr. Hadley had done this work without a permit, and that this section of the building should be either 1st or 2nd class construction. Mr. Hadley did not think the decision of the building Inspector fair and therefor appealed to the Board. It was finally decided that Mr. Wadman should go down to far. Hadley's house and try to arrange some way of placing back some of the alterations acid in that way he would not have to make the building 1st or 2nd class construction. A letter was received from Mr. Harold B. Lamont of 20 Winthrop Road complaining that the school children at Munroe School had not sufficient protection from auto traffic, and asking that the Board provide police traffic. The Board referred the letter to the School Committee as at the present time there is not sufficient policemen to do duty -of this sort. OVERSEERS OF THE POOR ' Mrs. Delia Holway was given permission to board her three children at her sister s home in Newton, she to take a room Ln Lexington. It was voted to continue to pay Mrs. Holway $8.00-w--�-D• towards the board of the children; this will relieve charges for coal and wood which has also been given to Mrs. Holway. PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS Letter was received from the Lexington Catholic Club thank- ing the Board for the use of the playgrounds for the holiday. The Board voted to establish a town dump beyond the Pumping Station on Lincoln btreet. A true record, Attest; s CLERK.
