MINUTES Of the meetings of June 3, 10, 17 & 24; September 9 & 16, 1976, were
approved after correction of minor typographical errors
CORRESPONDENCE Chmn. Barnes read letters of notification of due dates for
capital budgets and information for the Town Report which he has received
OLD BUSINESS Chmn Barnes read to the TCC his letters of response to questions
raised in previous meetings about the status of the TCC accounts and about
possible payments to the Lexington Minutemen. The first letter asks the Town
Accountant to transfer responsibility for expenses of $777 50 to some other
account since the Selectmen had agreed to the use of funds other than those
allotted to the TCC for the celebration of July 4 The second letter was
written to the Selectmen in response to the letter they had received
from former Town Manager O'Connell as well as the letter they had received
from Mrs Pierce of Volunteer Way
Chmn. Barnes also reported that he had spoken with Dr Kassler; in the
course of that discussion the future of the Reenactment was touched upon.
The Chairman restated the previous TCC position that this portion of the
Patriots Day celebration had been the responsibility of the Minutemen, with
coordination by the TCC, but that our understanding was that it would take
place through 1976 only Any continuation of the Reenactment must neces-
sarily involve discussions between all parties involved, including the
Selectmen and a newly-appointed Town Manager, since the TCC has no plans to
encourage a continuation at this time.
NEW BUSINESS The TCC was joined by Fire Chief Marshall, Capt Furdon, and Mr &
Mrs Sarles (representing Mrs Pierce) for a complete discussion of the history
of fireworks in Lexington, the role played by the Lions Club (Mr Fitzgerald
acted as spokesman for the Club) , and the potential problems involved should
any decisions which might encourage reestablishment of this 4th of July
tradition be made in Lexington. Both Police and Fire Departments are "un-
alterably"opposed to fireworks within the Town, no matter under whose auspices;
Mr Fitzgerald knew of no particular enthusiasm within the Lions Club for the
project It was felt by all present that a most complete presentation
of potential problems had been made; it was agreed that there seemed to be
a renewed interest in "small town celebrations", perhaps encouraged by the
Bicentennial; but it was also agreed that fireworks spectaculars were P°
necessarily a thing of the past for Lexington, given the present community j1
size and problems attendant on such a display N
VETERANS DAY Plans for the day are in fairly good order; there should be
suggestions for speaker made at the meeting of September 31
Respectfully submitted
Ruth Mitchell, Recording Secretary
