Hendrick came before the Board to ask whether or not he would have to present a petition to the Board to have an article inserted in the Tarrant for the next town meeting. Mr. Hendrick was requibsted to present his petition at an early date so that the article could be inserted in the Warrant. The Board informed Mr. Hendrick that they would see that the Article was properly worded. The bond of Francis H. Ready filed with signatures of Katherine L. Ready and Julia A. McCaffrey so that said Ready could obtain a Public Carriage License was accepted by the Board. Mr. Patrick J. Maguire, Acting Chief of Police, came before the Board relative to the conduct of Walter H. Kew, Mr. Maguire read reports showing when he and other officers of the force watched Kew go to his own house nights and re- main there instead of returning to his duty. Several nights ' in succession it was found that Officer Kew entered his house and did not return to duty for the early morning hours, In connection with the general conduct of the depart- ment the Board reported to the Chief that they had an investi- gation made to see whether all the officers covered their routes. Mr, Richards read the reports of the investigator to the Chief. The summary of the reports was that all officers remained out doors every night, with the exception of Kew, but that they did not cover their routes after 12 o'clock night; they seem to stay around the centre within walking distance of each other. After discussing the matter the Board considered it best for the Chief to inform the men of the result of the investigation and to give them another chance to cover their routes according to orders. In this connection the matter of a police telephone system was also discussed, but it was decided at this time to call the Officers' attention to their neglect of duty and await results. A license was granted to A. L. Smith of Bedford St. to sell Ice Cream, Confectionery, Soda Water and Fruit on the Lord's Day. Mr. A. L. Smith also applied for a license to sell vegetables. This matter was left on the table, awaiting legal opinion as to whether said Smith is at liberty to sell vegetables which are not raised on his own land on week days without a license. 23 Communication was received from the Arlington Board of Public 'Works in which they stated, in reply to the request of this Board for information, that Arlington puts public utilities only in unaccepted streets the layouts of which have been approved by the Board of Survey. The matter of rents from the Bacon property was discussed and it was decided to inform Mr. Taylor that unless he paid his rent to the Town he would be placed on the Overseers of the Poor rolls as being aided by the Town. In connection with the Chapin family not having paid their rent, Mr. Cotton informed the Board that Mrs. Chapin was at the present time ill and it would not be proper to notify her to vacate just at this time. In regard to the Webster rent due the Town, it was de- cided to hold that up at present until the Board gets a more complete accounting. A true record, Attest: cL. A letter was written to the New England Road Machinery Co ' in which a request was made that a bill of $100 paid to the New England Irlachinery Co. for a clutch for the stone crusher plant so that the same may be put in operation be paid by that com- pany inasmuch as the crusher would not work without this clutch, and the New England Road Machinery Co. were supposed to have supplied sufficient machinery so that the crusher could be operated properly.
