For Your Information...
Join us for lunch at the LEX CAFE! The daily lunch program has a new caterer! In collaboration with

The daily lunch is being prepared by Youville Place, with a focus on improved menu selection and food quality.
Reservations can be made by noon the day before you would like to join us by calling Despina Maradianos,

Money Management Program: Assistance with Monthly Bill Paying
Coping with bills and the mechanics of monthly bill paying can be overwhelming. Could you or someone you
know use help keeping up with your monthly bills? The Money Management Program (co- sponsored by AARP,
EOEA, and Mass Home Care) can provide a volunteer to assist with bill paying including: making a budget,
sorting bills, writing checks (for YOU to sign), and reconciling checkbooks to bank statements. Interested? Call
the Money Management Program at Minuteman Senior Services: 781- 272 -7177 or 978 - 263 -8720.
"ONE HOUR"— Volunteer O portunities at the Senior Center
Do you know how much you can do in just one hour? One hour per month can mean that an otherwise homebound
senior could attend a special luncheon at the senior center. One hour every two weeks might be an opportunity
for a cup of coffee and a chat. One hour per week could help a senior with vision impairment, pick up some
groceries, a prescription or get a haircut! The Friend to Friend Program is looking for volunteers who can donate
a few hours a month to help isolated seniors keep in touch with everyday activities. We carefully match people
according to the time they have available and what you would like to do. Currently, there are several seniors
looking for a friendly volunteer. Call Barbara Deveau at 781- 861 -0194 for more information.
Library Lines: Thank you to all who have donated books and magazines. Please remember that we accept
donations of books, batches of no more than ten -at -a -time. Now that the cold weather is coming, reading a good
book is a pleasant way to keep warm and comfortable so please come and browse among our collection of good
reading selections. Don't forget the many videos and DVD's we also have. Senior Center Library Hours -

From the Health Corner:
17 Nomm—
Brrrr! Winter Home Heating Safety
Charlotte Rodgers, RN, Social Services Nurse
We all know that the cold weather is hard on us, but did
you know the cold is particularly dangerous for seniors?
Here are some steps you can take to stay safe as the
mercury plunges:
Tips for Staying Warm
Exposure to cold can cause life- threatening health con-
ditions. You can avoid serious conditions such as frost-
bite and hypothermia, by keeping warm.
• Wear a hat, hood, or scarf, as most heat is lost through
the head.
• Wear layers, as they provide better insulation and
warmth.
• Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered if you go
outside.
• Keep clothing dry, if a layer becomes wet, remove it.
Home Heating Safety
More home fires happen during the winter months than
any other time of the year mainly due to home heating
devices. People age 65 and older are three times more
likely to die or be injured in a home fire as those who
are younger. In addition, heating devices and household
appliances that are fueled by gas, oil, kerosene or wood
in a closed up house can also produce deadly carbon
monoxide gas.
Tips &More 7
Some simple things you can do to protect your-
self are:
• Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on
every level of the home and check the batteries
every month and change them at least once per
year.
• If you are using a space heater remember that
space heaters need space! Keep anything that can
burn at least three feet away from the heater, and
if you're looking to buy a new space heater get one
that automatically shuts off if the heater falls over.
• If you use a wood burning fire place make sure you
have a glass front or screen that is large enough
to catch flying sparks and rolling logs. Have your
chimney flue checked once a year.
• Get an ABC multipurpose fire extinguisher for
your home; learn how to use it and check it yearly
to be sure it is working.
For more winter safety information, be sure to come
to the Senior Center on Monday, December 10t at
10:30 a.m. for a special presentation by the Lexing-
ton Fire Department. This presentation will feature
a discussion on "Fire Safety for Older Adults ", and
also will feature the "File of Life ". Please remember
to call the Senior Center receptionist to sign up at
781- 861 -0194.

DECEMBER 2007 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS 11
A Note from the Friends
of the Council on Aging.
We just wanted to say a resounding "Thank you,
to everyone who helped make our October 13th
Indoor Yard Sale, a great success. We would not
have been this successful or had as many great trea-
sures if it was not for the wonderful donations made
by yourselves and the members of our community.
I also want to say a special Thank You to the
Friends members; Mary Ellen Goodwin, Eleanor
Smith , Julie Miller, Marie Hill, for their incredible
efforts supporting this event. As many of you know,
Eleanor was our head donation collection agent.
We would also like to thank the volunteers who
gratefully gave of their time and muscles, whom we
would not have been able to hold this event without,
Charles Vail, Ruth White, Ralph McDewell and
Priscilla McDewell. I would also like to thank Jane
and Dick Paggett, whose continued support is be-
yond expectation. Other volunteers whose time and
efforts were graciously given are Kay Rego, Sue
Mayer, Thomas Goodwin and family, Terri, Jim and
Jessica Mack, and Jim Hankins and his crew from
J.H. Hankins Removal Services.
We have grateful hearts for all the volunteers that
helped with the success of this event for the benefit
of the Senior Center. I have not listed everyone,
however the efforts of all are very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Stm an U,7fe*,
President

Supportive Day Care
Due to the factors that include increasing nursing
home costs and decreases in Medicare and Med-
icaid coverage, aging is becoming a reality for
many seniors. As more people are re-
alizing a full life span, the numbers of
elders with multiple disabilities is
increasing, and it can be a burden
for spouses and caregivers of these
individuals to find solutions for
their care. As community supporters of these
elders, we look for ways to help them maintain
their independence and increase quality of life.
The Social Services Department Supportive Day
Care program is part of our available network to
assist. Supportive Day Care offers relief for family
members who are caring for an elder who needs
support and supervision in order to remain at
home. In addition to providing a safe place to
spend the day, we offer two meals, recreational
programming, exercise, social opportunities, in-
tellectual stimulation and round trip transporta-
tion. Supportive Day Care can be a key support
in assisting families who are coping with increas-
ing needs for supervision and care for a loved one
during day time hours. For more information about
the program contact Carolyn Griffith,
