AAA'S OLDER 8 WISER DRIVER PRESENTATION - Frida November 2, 2007
1 p.m .- 3 p.m. Traffic safety is vital for drivers of all ages, but older drivers
experience physical changes that can affect driving ability- changes
in vision, reaction time and flexibility. Yet while older drivers
as a group do have more crashes than people in their 40's, their
individual safety records differ as much as any group.
AAA's 60 Minute Older and Wiser Driver presentation discusses practical tips
seniors can use to compensate for the physical changes that come with age. The
tips and assessment tools presented aim at keeping seniors behind the wheel for
as long as possible, as safely as possible.
An assessment of "driver health" will follow the presentation. You will do this
assessment with a partner, and be able to keep the information you learn about your
driving skills. To register please call the Lexington Senior Center at 781 -861-

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP- EXTENDED ENROLLMENT
The Lexington Senior Center will offer a unique, six week,
professionally led bereavement group, which provides sup-
port and education for those who have recently lost a beloved
family member or friend. Grief is easier to bear when the
pain is shared with others who have had a similar experience.
Suffering alone prolongs pain, connecting with others who
have been there has the potential to heal.
The goal of the group will be to help each person move
closer to resolution of his or her private pain and grief: The
sessions will be structured, combining education with the
supportive approach. Homework, such as keeping a journal,
will be assigned and each member will be encouraged to
complete assignments. Group members will be expected to
attend all sessions and participate actively in each session.
However, the structured format will provide safety for those
who are uncomfortable with too much sharing, and members
will be encouraged but not pressured to speak.
The primary facilitator for this group will be Tanya
B. White, Ph.D. Dr. White, a licensed psychologist, is
board certified in Couples and Family Psychology and
has been practicing in Lexington for over 23 years. Not
long ago she, too, experienced the loss of her husband.
Dr. White will be assisted in leading the group by
Charlotte Rodgers, R.N., M.A„ a staff member from
the Social Services Department in Lexington. At least
one of the group leaders will be available to group
members by phone between the sessions.
The bereavement support group will take place at
the Lexington Senior Center on six Tuesday after-
noons at 2:00 p.m. beginning on October 30, 2007.
Each session will last two hours. Advanced registra-
tion is required. Please call the Senior Center recep-
tionist at 781- 861 -0194 to sign up. You will be asked
to leave your name and telephone number and a group
leader will contact you.

Volunteer Opportunities at the Senior Center
Do you know how much you can do in just one hour?
One hour per month can mean that an otherwise
homebound senior could attend a special luncheon at
the senior center. One hour every two weeks might
be an opportunity for a cup of coffee and a chat. One
hour per week could help a senior with vision im-
pairment, pick up some groceries, a prescription or
get a haircut! The Friend to Friend Program is look-
ing for volunteers who can donate a few hours a
month to help isolated seniors keep in touch with
everyday activities. We carefully match people ac-
cording to the time they have available and what you
would like to do. Currently, there are several seniors
looking for a friendly volunteer. Call Barbara Deveau
at 781-861-0194 for more information.
Please register with the receptionist. Free.

As winter approaches, we know ice and snow and tough
road conditions are not far away. It's a good time to think
about a "tune up" - not just for your car, but for your own
driving skills! Traffic safety is vital for drivers of all
ages, but older drivers experience physical changes that
can affect driving ability- changes in vision, reaction
time, and flexibility. Medications may also interfere
with driving. Check with your doctor to find out if your
medication may cause a side effect- this is especially
important when you start a new medication.
ViSiOR - Our eyes can change with age, and not usually
for the better. Physically, the eye's lens loses the ability
to change focus quickly, peripheral vision narrows, and
the retina becomes less sensitive to light. Since 90 percent
of decisions made while driving are based on information
acquired through the eyes, good vision is crucial to safe
driving. You should make sure that you have regular eye
exams, and discuss any new problems with your eye care
professional.
Reaction Time - Age lengthens the time it takes our
brain to process information and also makes it harder to
ignore distractions. Reacting to a situation while driving
involves three steps: sensing, deciding, and acting. For
an older driver, each step takes longer- and possibly so
long that it becomes dangerous. One way to overcome
this is to make sure that you leave more room in front
of the car. Allow a greater distance between you and the
vehicle ahead, so you will have plenty of time to stop.
Flexibility - Because driving is a physical activity, a
driver who gets no physical exercise may not have the
strength, flexibility, and coordination needed to op-
erate a car safely. Staying physically and mentally
active can improve your overall flexibility- and may
help you be a safer driver!
when t0 stop -Your age is not a good predictor of
your driving ability. What counts on the road is
performance. The following signs may be an indica-
tion of diminished capacity for driving safely:
Having a series of minor accidents or near misses.
Having wandering thoughts or being unable to
concentrate.
Being unable to read ordinary road signs.
Getting lost on familiar routes.
Having other drivers honk at you frequently.
Being spoken to about your driving by police,
family or friends.
For more information about driving safety, plan to
attend the presentation "Older and Wiser Driver ".
This 60 minute presentation is developed by AAA,
and will give you lots of practical tips to help keep
you behind the wheel for as long as possible. The
presentation also includes a self - assessment. Join AAA
of Southern New England on Friday, November 2,
2007 from 1 -3 PM at the Lexington Senior Center.

NOVEMBER 2007 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS 11
Due to the factors that include increasing nursing home
costs and decreases in Medicare and Medicaid cover-
age, aging is becoming a reality for many seniors. As
more people are realizing a full life span, the numbers
of elders with multiple disabilities is increasing, and it
can be a burden for spouses and caregivers of these
individual to find solutions for their care. As commu-
nity supporters of these elders, we look for ways to help
them maintain their independence and increase quality
of life.
The Social Services Department Supportive Day Care
program is part of our available network to assist.
Supportive Day Care offers relief for family members
who are caring for an elder who needs support and
supervision in order to remain at home. In addition to
providing a safe place to spend the day, we offer two
meals, recreational programming, exercise, social op-
portunities, intellectual stimulation and round trip trans-
portation. Supportive Day Care can be a key support
in assisting families who are coping with increasing
needs for supervision and care for a loved one during
