Supportive Day Care Due to the factors that include increasing nurs- ing home costs and decreases in Medicare and Medicaid coverage, aging in place of becoming a reality for many se- niors. As more people are realizing a full life span, the numbers of el- ders with multiple disabilities is in- creasing, and it can be a burden for spouses and caregivers of these individual to find solutions for their care. As community supporters of these elders, we look for ways to help them maintain their independence and increase quality of life. The Social Services Department Supportive Day Care program is part of our available network to assist. Supportive Day Care offers relief for family members who are caring for an elder who needs support and supervision in order to remain at home. In addition to provid- ing a safe place to spend the day, we offer two meals, recreational programming, exercisers, social opportunities, intellectual stimulation and round trip transportation. Pneumococcal disease is the cause of more than a third of pneumonia infections in adults. Every year in the United States thousands of people require hospital treatment and up to 15,000 people die due to the complications of pneumococcal infections. Pneumococcal disease infects people anytime of the year, but occurs mostly in the winter and spring. Anyone can be infected with pneumococcal disease. The people at highest risk pneumococcal disease are people 65 years of age and older, people with certain chronic medical problems, and people with weakened immune systems. Pneumococcal disease can be prevented with the pneumococcal vaccine. The pneumo- coccal vaccine is recommended for every person age 65 years and older, and people 50 years of age and older who have chronic medical problems. If you are 65 years of age and older, or 50 years of age and older with a chronic medical condition, you should speak with your doctor or primary care provider to find out if the vaccine is right for you. In some cases, you may need to have a booster to insure protection. The Lexington Health Department and the Lexington Social Services Department will offer a pneumococcal vaccine clinic for Lexington residents on Wednesday June 13, 2007 from loam to l pm. The vaccine clinic will be held in the dining room at the Lexington Senior Center, 1475 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington. Parking is located behind the building.
