Waste Management Committee formed
At its meeting on November 26, 1990, the Board of Selectmen voted to
dissolve the Waste Management Task Force, and to form the Waste Management
Committee The Selectmen' s Charge to the Waste Management Committee is
attached.

CHARGE TO THE WASTE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
WHEREAS The manner in which the Tann of Lexington handles the collection
and disposal of its solid waste and household hazardous waste
continues to be both a major environment issue as well as a
significant budget item; and
WHEREAS The Board of Selectmen's goals in the area of waste collection
and disposal are (1) to further public awareness of the need to
reuse and recycle as much of the waste stream as possible, and to
find alternatives to hazardous substances; and (2) to contain the
cost of non-recyclable waste through local and regional efforts;
and
WHEREAS The Town Meeting has shown continued strong support for the
Town's mandatory re-cycling program and the household hazardous
waste collection program as well as earlier regional efforts to
establish a resource recovery facility; and
WHEREAS The outstanding success of the Town's mandatory recycling program
and household hazardous waste collection has demonstrated citizen
support for innovative programs to handle our waste stream and
their willingness to participate in such programs; and
WHEREAS There is still a need to educate both our youth and adults to the
benefits as well as the necessity to change our more traditional
ways of waste disposal; and
WHEREAS The Town is fortunate to have a high level of expertise available
to it in both its volunteers and staff;
NOW THEREFORE be it resolved that the Selectmen's Waste Management
Committee be created to monitor and advise on matters relating to
the Tam's comprehensive waste management program, and to seek
out and develop new initiatives in this area. This canprehensive
program deals with recycling, household hazardous waste,
composting, nonrrecyclable waste, public education and financing
Organization: The Committee shall be comprised of seven members appointed
by the Board of Selectmen to three year terms. The Chairman
shall be appointed by the membership for a term of one year

The Camnittee shall report to the Board on an annual basis or <--I ;.
more frequently if need arises. µ
The Committee shall be staffed by the Director of Public Works a-.
and the Director of Public Health or their designees and any
other staff they may wish to assign to the Committee frau time to '
time.
One member of the Board of Selectmen shall serve as liaison to
the Committee.
