Lexin _gton Veteran's Association - Monday, February
12, 2007 at 1:15 p.m. at the Cary Memorial Library
(Meeting Room) Lexington Center, at 1874
Massachusetts Ave.- Group is entitled a Vietnam
Odyssey. This is the story of a young man leaving a secure
environment in a small Italian neighborhood in the North
End of Boston to serve a tour of duty in Vietnam. Ralph
Masciulli brings to life the anxiety and trauma when in
1968 - 69, he finds himself in Phu Bai, Republic of
Vietnam after having joined the 513th Maintenance
Battalion. The 513th was a newly formed, low priority
Army Reserve Unit that everyone rushed to join because
it would never go to Vietnam. This is his story: one
enlisted man's experiences in a war that had conflicts at
home as well as in the combat zone. Mr. Masciulli's talk
presents a valuable and interesting perspective of our
country's involvement in southeast Asia and the troubles
of ordinary people here in the U.S. Mr. Masciulli was
educated in parochial schools in the North End and
attended Northeastern University where he received his
BS in Electrical Engineering, MEd and a Certificate of
Advanced Graduate Study. He is currently retired from
the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology where he
was a full professor and Chairman of the Electronic and
Computer departments for many years. Mr. Masciulli is
also the author of "The Corner Boys," a collection of
short stories about family, friends and the traditions of
Italians growing up in the North End. Join us for this
lecture. All are welcome. Coffee is generously provided
by Starbucks (Lexington Center) and cookies /cake will
be served.

Supportive Day Care
Due to the factors that include increasing nursing home costs and decreases in Medicare and Medicaid
coverage, aging in place of becoming a reality for many seniors. As more people are realizing a full
life span, the numbers of elders with multiple disabilities is increasing, and it can be a burden for
spouses and caregivers of these individual to find solutions for their care. As community supporters
of these elders, we look for ways to help them maintain their independence and increase quality of life.
The Social Services Department Supportive Day Care program is part of our available network to assist.
Supportive Day Care offers relief for family members who are caring for an elder who needs support and
supervision in order to remain at home. In addition to providing a safe place to spend the day, we offer two
meals, recreational programming, exercisers, social opportunities, intellectual stimulation and round trip trans-
portation. Supportive Day Care can be a key support in assisting families who are coping with increasing needs
for supervision and care for a loved one during day time hours.
For more information about the program contact Carolyn Griffith, 781- 259 -1807
FEBRUARY 2007 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS 11
From the Health Corner: "ACT in Time"
Charlotte Rodgers, RN, Social Services Nurse
JtappSf `v 'j Da* .
In February, thoughts turn to the heart. It
is also a great time to think about your own heart
health, and, to learn more about how to act quickly in
response to someone who may be having a heart attack
or a stroke. The Lexington Senior Center is offering
two programs this month that will focus on heart health
and stroke. On February 13th, we will have a "Healthy
Heart Brunch" that will offer tips and ideas to help you
improve your overall heart health. On February 14th,
we will present the "Act FAST- Rapid Response to
Stroke" program, designed by the Massachusetts De-
partment of Public Health. Details and how to sign up
are elsewhere in this newsletter.
Statistics: Coronary heart disease is America's number
one killer. Stroke is number three, and a leading cause
of serious disability. That's why it is so important to
reduce your risk factors, know the warning signs, and
know how to respond quickly and properly if warning
signs occur.
• Shortness of breath. May occur with or without
chest discomfort.
• Other signs. These may include breaking out in a
cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
As with men, women's most common heart attack
symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are
somewhat more likely than men to experience some of
the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of
breath, nausea /vomiting, and back or jaw pain.
Act in Time: If you or someone you're with has chest
discomfort, especially with one or more of the other
signs, don't wait longer than a few minutes (no more
than 5) before calling for help. Call 9-1-1 ....get to a
hospital right away. Calling 9 -1 -1 is almost always the
fastest way to get lifesaving treatment. Emergency
medical services staff can begin treatment when they
arrive- up to an hour sooner than if someone gets to
the hospital by car! Patients who arrive at the hospital
by ambulance usually receive faster treatment at the
hospital ER, too.
Heart Attack Warning Signs: Some heart attacks are
sudden and intense- the "movie heart attack ", where no
one doubts what is happening. But most heart attacks
start slowly, with only mild pain or discomfort. Often
people affected aren't sure what's wrong and wait too
long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean
a heart attack is happening:
• Chest Discomfort. Most heart attacks involve dis-
comfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than
a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back.
It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing,
fullness or pain.
• Discomfort in other areas of the upper body.
Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or
both arms, in the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

News about Dark Chocolate:
"A DARK CHOCOLATE A DAY
KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY"
Here is news that is not hard to like. Eating a small,
1.6 -ounce bar of dark chocolate every day is good for
you! Dark chocolate keeps up to 95% of its flavoniods-
and flavoniods are the substance found in chocolate
that are thought to increase the blood flow in your
arteries. Better blood flow is good for your heart! But,
while a little dark chocolate is good, a lot is not better.
Chocolate is still loaded with calories. So, indulge a
little and remember that a balanced diet - and plenty
of exercise- is still the key to heart health.
