Newport Playhouse and Cabaret Restaurant Lexington Day Care Program - Many highly impaired older people continue to live independently assisted by social programs that provide supports, encouragement, friendship and caring. One available program that assists seniors who are having difficulty managing at home is Lexington Supportive Day Care Program. This program is suitable for those with physical or memory impairments, providing a supervised day setting for seniors who would otherwise be isolated and alone during the day, or perhaps require institutional care. Program goals include: To provide an interesting and stimulating daytime environment that encourages independence, enhances social skills, and increases a sense of competence. The program strives to enrich the lives of its participants in a warm and friendly setting. • To provide transitional care during times when families are looking for permanent placements in nursing or assisted living facilities. • To provide the opportunity for short periods of relief to families who care for older persons in their homes. Emotional support and guidance are offered to caregivers and their families who are coping with stressful home situations. In home assessments, family and individual support, information and referrals are provided. Breakfast, a hot lunch, and afternoon snacks are available, with transportation and a full day of activities included in the daily fee. Individuals from 60 to 95 with varying degrees of ability attend the program. Memory loss, confusion and social isolation are the most common reasons for attending. The Day Care House provides activities in a safe, supportive setting that encourages independence and provides a sense of well being. For additional information about our program, call Carolyn Griffith, Director at 781- 259 -1807. JANUARY 2007 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS 11 From the Health Corner: "Guidelines for Healthy Eating" Charlotte Rodgers, RN, Social Services Nurse Happy New Year! With the holiday season behind us (and maybe an extra pound or two on us) it's a good time to think seriously about healthy eating habits. Last year the United States Department of Agriculture de- signed a new Food Pyramid. There are now six food groups: grain foods, fruits, vegetables, milk and milk products; meat and meat alternatives; and oils. The new United States Dietary Guidelines outline the basis of a healthy diet. These guidelines include: 1. Variety: Eat a good variety of foods from each of the basic food groups while staying within your calorie needs. 2. Activity: Be physically active every day. 3. Good Proportions: Choose fats and carbohydrates wisely. Increase your daily amount of fruits and veg- etables, whole -grain foods and non -fat milk products in your diet. 4. Moderation: Control the number of calories you eat to manage your weight. If you drink alcoholic bev- erages or salt your food, do so in moderation. 5. Gradual Improvement: Take small steps each day to improve your diet and lifestyle. 6. Personalization: From among your favorite foods, choose to eat regularly the ones that are nutrient - dense. 7. Food Safety: Keep your food safe through proper cooking, cleaning, chilling and separation. An omelet is an egg - cellent food choice. Quick and easy, it packs a lot of nutrition, and is simple to make whether you are cooking for one or two, or having guests. Here is one to try: Cheese and Tomato Omelet (serves one) x 2 eggs 2 tablespoons water Zb pinch of salt (optional) ground black pepper (optional) 2 tablespoons Neufchatel cheese, farmer's cheese or crumbled goat cheese 2 -3 tablespoons diced fresh tomato or quartered grape tomato 2 -3 large fresh basil leaves, torn in small pieces In a small bowl, beat together the eggs and water with salt and pepper. Coat a skillet with non -stick spray. Heat pan on medium -high heat, pour in egg mixture. (Mixture should set immediately at edges). With a pancake turner, carefully push cooked por- tions at edges toward the center so uncooked por- tions can reach the hot pan surface. When top is thickened and no visible liquid egg mixture remains, sprinkle the cheese, tomato and basil on V2 of the omelet. With pancake turner, fold omelet in half or roll. Invert onto a plate and enjoy! More detailed information on the new food pyramid can be found on the Internet at www.MyPyramid.gov (Adaptedftom "Rediscover Eggs!
