One available program that assists seniors who are having difficulty managing at home is Lexington Supportive Day Care Program. This program is suitable for those with physical or memory impairments, providing a supervised day setting for seniors who would otherwise be isolated and alone during the day, or perhaps require institutional care. Program goals include: • To provide an interesting and stimulating daytime environment that encourages independence, enhances social skills, and increases a sense of competence. The program strives to enrich the lives of its participants in a warm and friendly setting. • To provide transitional care during times when families are look- ing for permanent placements in nursing or assisted living facili- ties. • To provide the opportunity for short periods of relief to families who care for older persons in their homes. Emotional support and guidance are offered to caregivers and their families who are coping with stressful home situations. In home assessments, family and individual support, information and referrals are provided. Breakfast, a hot lunch, and afternoon snacks are available, with transportation and a full day of activities included in the daily fee. Individuals from 60 to 95 with varying degrees of ability attend to the program. Memory loss, confusions and social isolation are the most common reasons for attending. The Day Care House provides activities in a safe, supportive setting that encourages independence and provides a sense of well being. For additional information about our program, call Carolyn Griffith, Director at 781- 259 -1807. Receptionist Help Wanted - Looking for a new volunteer opportunity in a friendly and busy environment? Public Health officials agree that you can be immunized as late as early January and still get protection from the flu. Holiday Health: For many of us, the holidays are a time for special events, good food and gathering with family and friends. The holiday season can also trigger feelings of stress and depression- so much for peace and joy, right? Actually, with some practical tips, you can minimize stress and enjoy the season more than you thought you would! Experts have identified three areas that commonly trigger holiday stress. Understanding these "trig- gers" can help you deal with the emotional and physical issues that may come up: Relationships: Family misunderstandings or conflict may intensify during the holidays. If you are facing the holiday season without a loved one, you may find yourself lonely or sad. Finances: Your financial situation can cause stress at any time of the year, but during the holidays, pressure to overspend may increase this stress. Physical demands: Higher demands on your time, stress, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, and over- indulgence in food and drink are ingredients for holiday illness. Here are some tips to help you have a healthier, happier and stress - reduced holiday: 1. Keep expectations for the holiday season manageable. Set realistic goals and pace yourself. 2. Remember the holiday season does not banish reasons for feeling sad or lonely: there is room for these feelings to be present. 3. Leave "yesteryear" in the past and look toward the future. Life brings changes, and each season is different and can be enjoyed in its own way. 4. If possible, try to do something for someone else. Volunteering to help others is a good way to enjoy the season. 5. Be aware that excessive drinking will only increase feelings of depression. 6. Spend time with supportive and caring people. Reach out and make new friends or contact someone you have not seen in a while. 7. Look ahead - look forward to trying something new in the New Year -a new group or class at the Senior Center, a good book or an outing with friends. For more ideas on "Putting the Happy Back into the Holidays ", plan to attend the presentation by Jean DeThomas on Thursday, December 14 1 ``, 1:30 pm at the Senior Center. 12 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS DECEMBER 2006 Yoga for Health and Fitness, with Lisa Groves Fridays, 9:30 -10:35 a.m. Dec. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 $30.00 Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26 $24.00 Develop strength, flexibility, and balance, and improve overall physical and mental well -being using time - honored yoga movements, postures, and breathing exercises.
