Although some cognitive functions decline as a normal course of aging, loss of mental functioning may be reversible when diagnosed and treated by professionals. During October, the Senior Center will participate in National Depression Screening Day. The most common late life mental health condition is depression, and it is treatable. As we age, changes occur, such as losing loved ones, coping with physical and mental challenges, financial concerns, and feeling lonely. Sometimes, these changes may lead to depression. Some medical conditions, such as heart disease, increase your risk for depression. Some symptoms of depression in- clude a loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy, loss of energy, sadness, change in sleep patterns, loss of appetite and weight and difficulty concentrating or mak- ing decisions. It is important to know that depression is not a normal part of aging and can be successfully treated. The first step is to tell someone how you are feeling. Another important part of your mental health is self - care. This is especially important if you are a caregiver. If you, or someone you know is taking care of another person, take note of how much stress you /they are feeling. Take time to take care of yourself. If you know a caregiver, offer to give them a break. Watch your diet, exercise and get plenty of rest. Make time for lunch with friends or an outing. Take advantage of community services such as adult day care or in -home companion services. On October 25 Kelly Magee and Charlotte Rodgers will be discussing mental health issues, strategies for caregivers and how to get services. We will also discuss our roles within the Department of Social Services. It's time to think about Flu Shots again! The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each fall. October or November is the best time to get vaccinated, but you can still get vaccinated in December and later. Flu season can begin as early as October and as late as May. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention offers the following guidelines for who should be vaccinated: • Child age 6 -59 months • Pregnant women • People 50 years of age and older and people with chronic medical conditions • People who live in nursing homes and other long term care facilities • Caregivers, health care providers or household con- tacts of someone in the above named groups The Town of Lexington will be offering flu vaccinations in November. Specific information will be posted on the Town web site, newspapers and in this newsletter as it becomes available. You may also check with your personal health care provider to obtain the vaccine. Medicare covers the cost of the flu vaccine.
