Introduction to Grant Writing
Wednesdays, July 12th & 19th
at 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The Lexington Council on Aging will be offering
the Introduction to Grant Writing Workshop
given by Managing Change. This workshop series
will be held at the Senior Center from 9:30 am to
11:30 am. Grant Money has always been an im-
portant source of money for many non - profit or-
ganizations. However, knowing there is grant
money "out there" and knowing how to access it
are two different things. The Introduction to Grant
Writing workshop series is an overview of the
grant writing process. The first session concen-
trates on assessing the agency's readiness and re-
searching funding sources. The second session de-
tails the different parts of a grant proposal itself
and realistic management tips. It is a survey semi-
nar and lots of information will be shared. Man-
aging Change offers the Introduction to Grant
Writing workshop series to the local adult educa-
tion programs as well as Councils on Aging in
Massachusetts. Register with the Receptionist.
$5.00 materials fee. Class size is limited.

10 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS JULY / AUGUST 2006
From the Health Corner:
O Beating the Heat and Enjoying Summer
Charlotte Rodgers, RN, Social Services Nurse
Summer provides and excellent opportunity to get outside and enjoy a more active lifestyle. But summer
also holds risks - such as heat, skin cancers and even tetanus- that may strike seniors more often than
the general population.
Older adults are more likely to experience problems with prolonged heat waves of over -90 degree
temperatures with high dew points. Factors include age, disease and even medication. Many
blood pressure medications, for example, are diuretics. They remove salt and fluid volume%
from the body. Coupled with perspiring from high temperatures, these medications could lead
to dehydration, which, in turn, can lead to discomfort, confusion and even more serious, life-
g p g °
threatening complications. As we age, g y the mechanism that regulates thirst is not as finely tuned a
and it is therefore less likely to direct us to drink more fluids. Drinking at least six 8 -ounce glasses
of fluid every day will help prevent dehydration!
In addition, senior's bodies are not as able to regulate body temperature. Make sure your home is properly
ventilated, especially during extreme heat, and check in on frail neighbors to make sure they are safe.
Practice sun - safety: Stay out of direct, intense sun and always use sun protection, including sunscreen
and a hat! Watch for changes in your skin, and see your doctor if you notice a trouble spot.
Tetanus is an unusual but hard to diagnose condition that affects seniors more than any other age group.
Tetanus occurs when a microorganism, often found in the soil, enters the body through a cut. Make
sure you have a tetanus booster every 10 years!
We've all heard this: Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold! At room temperature, the bacteria in
food can double every 20 minutes. It is important to refrigerate foods quickly because cold temperatures
keep most bacteria from multiplying. Planning proper food storage will help you stay healthy and enjoy
that summer picnic!
Take advantage of summer weather to enjoy walks or light exercise, such as gardening. It may improve
your balance, build muscle mass, lower blood pressure, improve cardiac health, and provide other health
benefits- emotional and physical. But, don't do too much too soon. With any activity, ease into it and
gradually build up your endurance. Watch the heat and your fluid intake, and you can enjoy the summer
in vood health!
