But summer also holds risks - such as heat, skin cancers and even tetanus- that may strike seniors more often than the general population. Older adults are more likely to experience problems with prolonged heat waves of over-90 degree temperatures with high dew points. Factors include age, disease and even medication. Many bloodpressure medications, for example, are diuretics. Theyremove salt and fluid volume (7,------ \ '''\ /i --- p ,, from the body. Coupled with perspiring from high temperatures, these medications could lead 1llk to dehydration, which, in turn, can lead to discomfort, confusion and even more serious, life- , ° threatening complications. As we age, the mechanism that regulates thirst is not as finely tuned, ' il ,;f and it is therefore less likelyto direct us to drink more fluids. Drinkingat least six 8-ounce glasses ' of fluid every day will help prevent dehydration! i In addition, senior's bodies are not as able to regulate body temperature.Make sure your home is properly ventilated, especially during extreme heat, and check in on frail neighbors to make sure they are safe. Practice sun-safety: Stay out of direct, intense sun and always use sun protection, including sunscreen and a hat! Watch for changes in your skin, and see your doctor if you notice a trouble spot. Tetanus is an unusual but hard to diagnose condition that affects seniors more than any other age group. Tetanus occurs when a microorganism, often found in the soil, enters the body through a cut. Make sure you have a tetanus booster every 10 years! We've all heard this: Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold! At room temperature, the bacteria in food can double every 20 minutes. It is important to refrigerate foods quickly because cold temperatures keep most bacteria from multiplying. Planning proper food storage will help you stay healthy and enjoy that summer picnic! Take advantage of summer weather to enjoy walks or light exercise, such as gardening. It may improve your balance, build muscle mass, lower blood pressure, improve cardiac health, and provide other health benefits- emotional and physical. But, don't do too much too soon. With any activity, ease into it and gradually build up your endurance. Watch the heat and your fluid intake, and you can enjoy the summer in good health! ,C— + (c_ ,,, '''- tja i SUN SAFETY ACTION STEPS -.Xtodio•-+-V ' e A ❑ Limit Time in the Midday Sun ❑ Seek Shade ciy s ❑ Wear a Hat ❑ Cover Up ❑ Wear Sunglasses that Block UV Radiation ❑ Always Use Sunscreen ...r 1 " O Avoid Sunlamps and Tanning Salons 0 Watch For the UV Index Report JULY / AUGUST 2006 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS 11 ENE Trip reservations can be made by mail or in person at the Senior Center.
