From the Health Corner:
"Be S.M.A.R. T. About Taking Prescription Drugs"
Charlotte Rodgers, RN, Social Services Nurse
Did you know that one in four people does not stick to medical
treatment the doctor ordered? It is very important to take the right
amount of medicine at the right time- especially if you have a chronic
condition like heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
In the case of GERD, taking your medication incorrectly could result
in your waking during the night with uncomfortable heartburn.
Here are five tips from the Foundation for Better Health Care and
the National Council on Aging about how to be "S.M.A.R.T." when
taking your medication.
• Start today to control symptoms and treat your condition by taking
your medication correctly.
• Make taking your medication more memorable by taking your pills
along with a daily activity (eating breakfast, brushing your teeth).
• Always refill your medication when you have less than a 7 -day
supply.
• Remain on your medication for the full duration of time as pre-
scribed by your doctor.
• Talk with your doctor, his or her office nurse or your pharmacist if
you have any questions.
Remember- don't be afraid to ask questions! Your health care
provider is happy to answer your questions and help you to understand
why you are taking the medication and how you should take it.
