From the Selectmen... The Board of Selectmen has selected Carl Valente for the position of Town Manager. Mr.Valente is currently Town Manager in Weston. Mr. Valente's start date will be July 11. This recommendation comes after a nine-month search and an intensive effort to find a candidate whose experience and skills are best suited to the challenges facing Lexington. Staff and citizens who participated in the interview and visits leading up to the recommendation were all of the same opinion. Mr. Valente's strong financial background, his experience working in communities with high performing school districts and his genuine enthusiasm for local government will ensure stability and strength of leadership for Lexington. Carl brings broad experience in municipal government. Mr. Valente previously held positions in Needham, and served in the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and as Director of Financial Management, International City/Council Management As- sociation(ICMA), Washington, D.C. Mr.Valente has been in Weston since 2001, serving as the first Town Manager follow- ing a charter change. As Town Manager he reorganized the central administration, creating a senior management team strengthened by appointments of several key positions. While in Weston to address demand for public services from a growing school age and senior population, Mr. Valente initi- ated an annual"Financial Summit"bringing together the Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee and School Committee to focus on key financial, policy and service delivery challenges. While in Needham, Mr. Valente brought about a variety of public improvements to strengthen the business community in the downtown area. Some may remember that his wife Mau- reen Valente, who is now Town Manager of Sudbury, served as Lexington's treasurer from 1992 to 1997. Carl and Maureen live in Bedford and have two daughters, one in college and the other preparing for college. Among the factors influencing the Board's decision was Mr. Valente's willingness to reach out into the community as evi- denced by his practice of having lunch at the Weston Sr. Center once a month. Be on the look-out for our new Town Manager.
