Leave a Legacy: A Grandyarent Memoir
Three Wednesday Mornings — May 11, 18, 25 — 10:00 am - 12:00 pm.
Jill Braceland of Managing Change will present this informal but informative program. Hon-
oring our life's experiences by writing our family histories creates a legacy for future genera-
tions. Discover how easily writing the family stories can be done. This interactive presenta-
tion is enjoyable and motivates the "keeper of the flame." A specific journal is utilized. Space
is limited - Sign up with the receptionist. $5 materials fee.
Financial Security During Retirement — Tuesdays, May 10, 17, & 24 — 1:00 pm.
A Seminar for Retirees. This three - session seminar covers all the important financial strategies
that are critical throughout retirement. Information and tools to combat inflation, minimize
taxation, assets allocation and investment selection and maximize the strength of one's portfo-
lio will be presented. You will also be asked to consider the non - financial aspects of retire-
ment, such as self - image, use of time, and housing choices. Finally, this course concludes with
sections on Social Security, long -term care insurance, the new IRA distribution rules, and es-

May Program Highlights
Trusts and Probate. Tuesdays, 9:30 am -11:30 am. An ongoing member - directed class which discusses the use
of wills, trusts and probate in estate planning, as well as many aspects of senior living and town affairs. Class
members all contribute to the discussions with their experience and points of view.
World Affairs Study Group. Tuesdays, 2:00 pm. The World Affairs Group continues to meet in the Conference
Room. Although Dr. Rathore has been unable to attend recently, he wants us to continue until he is able to meet
with us again. The format is discussion about world affairs followed by approximately 30 minutes of current issues
in the US. New people are always welcome.
The Thursday Social Group. Thursdays, 10 -11:30 am. For those in retirement, everyday can seem like
Saturday! For some, it's an adventure; for others, they need a few ideas about how to fill their days. Join comrades
in retirement as we get together for coffee & conversation.

in 1904, the film details the experiences and creative journey of "Peter Pan" author J.M. Barrie, and how

her teenage daughter move to Los Angeles in hopes of finding a better life. They move in with an

Lexington Veteran's Group. Monday, May 9,1:15 pm. In the Meeting Room at Cary Library. Lexington
dentist, Colonel Thomas Braun, who just returned from a year's duty in Iraq, will share his experiences with us.
Colonel Braun and his Army Reserve dental unit conducted their practice in one of Sadam's former palaces in Tikrit.
This is a great opportunity to learn about current life and action in Iraq. Our meetings are free and all are welcome.

Art History Slide Presentations, with Gerry Weisenberg. Presentations begin with a brief introduction followed

Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay will be at The Senior Center on Thursday, May 12 at 9:00 am.

taking the time to talk, you've got something to share with a Little Brother or Sister; and he or she has a story, per-
spective, and a live experience to share with you. For just a couple of hours every other week, you can share some
great laughs with one great kid, and you're never alone; Big Brothers of Massachusetts Bay will support you and
your match by providing tickets to cultural and sporting events or just giving you new ideas for match activities. For

Transportation Options...
• LEXPRESS. The Town of Lexington's mini -bus service is wheelchair equipped and ADA compliant. The service
operates six fixed routes; each route runs once per hour. Service is from 7:00 am to 6:25 pm, Monday - Friday. No
service on Saturday, Sunday, or legal holidays. Route No. 1 stops at the Senior Center entrance at 12:48 pm, 1:48 pm
and upon request. LEXPRESS connects with the MBTA, Burlington B -Line, and Lowell Regional Transit. Fare for
seniors is $.75. Transfers within the LEXPRESS system are $.25. For riders on Route No. 5 going to Burlington, a
$.25 surcharge applies. An annual senior pass is available for $125. For more information call 781- 861 -1210 or

• MBTA Buses. As part of the regional bus system, Routes #62 and #76 service Lexington and provide a link to Ale-
wife Station and the Red Line to Boston. The general fare of $1.25. Senior Citizen Discount Pass (65 +) fare is $35.
Requires Senior Citizen Pass ID obtained by submitting an application to the MBTA. Call 617-222-5438 for info.
• FISH (Friendly Independent Sympathetic Help) is a high- regarded private volunteer organization founded in 1972
that offers people free rides to medical appointments. FISH's 120 volunteers provide some 150 round trips per
month. If you can use a phone, drive a car and can volunteer one day a month, you can play a pivotal role in main-
taining this essential service. To volunteer call 781 - 862 -0375.
• Housing Villages Stop & Shop Bus. On Tuesdays and Fridays, a C &W school bus transports residents from the
three Lexington Housing Villages to Stop & Shop. The destination on Tuesday is the Lexington Stop & Shop and
on Friday the Bedford Stop & Shop. Service begins at 8:50 am at Countryside Village followed by stops at Vyne-
brook and Greeley. The bus leaves Stop & Shop at 10:30 am to return to each of the Villages. Free service comple-
ments of Stop & Shop.
• MBTA "The Ride "... For residents with mobility issues who are unable to use public transportation. The applica-
tion process involves input from a health care professional who must complete the Application for Certification of
ADA Paratransit Eligibility. Rides can be scheduled from 14 days before the trip to 4:00 pm the day before. Contact
the MBTA Office for Transportation Access at 617- 222 -5123 for more information.
For Your Information . . .
• Senior Tax Work Off Program. Applications accepted through July 15, 2005 from Lexington seniors. Lexington
property owners over 60 can reduce their property taxes by up to $750 per year by working for the Town of Lexing-
ton. Income must not exceed $36,750 for single applicants and $42,000 for married applicants. Call 781 - 861 -0194

• "The Thriving Spirit of Alzheimer's. " Thursday, May 5, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. National Heritage Museum
Lexington. Minuteman Senior Services presents a very special caring conversation with the Reverend Kathleen
Rusnak, PhD. Dr. Rusnak's alternative views challenge participants into a more spiritual analysis of human nature

• AARP Safe Driving Program. Tuesday, May 3 and 10, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. This classroom refresher course fo-
cuses on compensating for physiological changes that can affect the perceptual skills of drivers over 55 years of age.
Program is held at Emerson Hospital and includes lunch. Fee is $10.00. Call 978 - 287 -3085 to register.
The Massachusetts Senior Games will hold its 14th annual state summer games competition June 23 -26 at
Springfield College in Springfield, MA. Men and women age 50 and over are eligible to participate. MASG
recognizes the need and desire of seniors in our state to be knowledgeable about good health behaviors/
practices and to participate in wholesome and enriching physical activity consistent with their age and abilities.
The Senior Games provide people with opportunities for competition, recreation, and camaraderie. Registration
is now underway. For a registration packet or for more information, please call the Massachusetts Senior
Games Office at 413 - 748 -3812. Packets are also available at The Senior Center.
Library Lines ...NEW HOURS — Monday through Friday, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. We were pleased to
have such a good response to our request for audio tapes. Thank you very much. We are hoping, too, to receive do-
nated DVDs to better serve our patrons who have DVD players. A reminder - new books are being added to our
shelves on a regular basis. We welcome your patronage.

Travel today to beautiful Cape Cod, where we will arrive in Sandwich, the oldest town on the Cape. We'll visit the Sandwich Glass
Museum, where you will see glass blowing artisans at work and view the extensive collection of glass ranging from early Americana to
contemporary. Lunch will be served at the Daniel Webster Inn the Grand Buffet Luncheon fruit cup, a selection of entrees (Coq au
Vin, Pasta Primavera, Scrod), and apple cranberry crisp. The afternoon will be spent at the Heritage Museum and Gardens, 76 acres of
rolling hills that are beautifully landscaped with seasonal plants and flowers. There are three museums to visit and a 1912 carousel that

The Sunday afternoon concert by the Boston Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by James Levine and features pianist, Peter Serkin,
and the music of Harbison, Varese, and Gershwin. We will stay at the Williams Inn in Williamstown; dinner on Sunday and breakfast on
Monday included. Monday morning we will travel to Pittsfield to visit the Hancock Shaker Village, set on 1,200 acres of farm, woodland,
and pasture in the Berkshire Hills. This restored village is home to the premier collection of 20 historic Shaker buildings including the
famous Round Stone Barn. The artifacts include Shaker furniture, craft and household items--oval boxes, brooms, baskets, and textiles.
Before returning home, we will stop in Stockbridge to have lunch (on your own). $25 deposit due on registration; balance due June 25.

Stone Meadows Golf is offering Senior Citizens FREE informal golf instruction with Joe DiVico and a 20 percent dis-
count on the 9 hole, par 3 golf course. The course at Stone Meadows is pristine, compact, and easy to walk. It is an
ideal course for beginners and a great short course for experienced golfers. Joe is an expert golfer who specializes in
teaching senior citizens a step -by -step approach to golfing. Free informal lessons and discount available on the follow-

Drop -in Exercise Programs...
Stretch & Bend. Large, popular stretching and limbering group offers support and instruction. The group
meets Mondays through Friday at 9:00-9:30 am. Free.
60+ Fitness. Lead by enthusiastic group members, this workout focuses on both upper and lower body muscle
strengthening, using free weights and bands. Meets Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays at 9:35- 10:30. All are
welcome. On Monday, May 9, Sue LeVasseur will run the class. Free.
Kripalu Yoga with Don Weikert. Move gently from a centering meditation, to stretching and warm -ups, to
learning physical postures (asanas) to relaxation. Mondays 8:30 -9:45. $5 /session. Pay instructor.
Line Dancing with Patricia Kavgian. Dancing is a great way to exercise! Come join the group for great music,
fun dances and a group of people having a great time. Every Thursday from 1:15 to 2:30 in the dining room.

Ping Pong. All welcome to join a game on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, 2 -4. All levels of experience in
Ping Pong are welcome. Free.

• Bereavement & Friendship Group. Meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, 1:00-2:30 pm.
• Prostate Cancer Group. This group is for men who currently have prostate cancer or survivors who wish to share the knowledge
they have gained with others. Meets third Wednesday of each month, 1:00 - 2:30 pm..
• Parldnson's Support Group. Led by Art Sotak. Support for individuals suffering from Parkinson's disease, families & caregivers.
Group meets the 4th Monday of each month at 1:00 pm.
• Caregivers Group: Group meets 1 st and 3rd Thursday of each month, 2-3:30 pm. A support group for caregivers
of individuals with memory impairment. The group is ongoing and there is no fee. Leader is Sandy Simon, an
experienced geriatric social worker.
• Asian Support Group. We meet to talk about personal and family issues, and adjustment to American culture.
Meets at the Senior Center 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month, 1:00 -2:30 pm.
• Podiatry Clinic. With Dr. Teri Burtoft. Thursday, June 16. Call 781- 861 -0194 to schedule an appointment. $25.

• Blood Pressure Clinic. Thursdays at 10:00 AM. On the first Thursday of the month, the clinic is held at the Senior

• Veterans' Agent Office Hours. Our Veterans' Agent Pat Flynn can meet with you during his weekly office hours,

• SERNE. Counselors Rose Lerner or Rhoda Neidorf are available to help you with any aspect of your health

• Adult Day Care. A structured, supervised day program for seniors who are having difficulty living independently.
