Lexington Reads Comes to the Senior Center. "Lexington Reads" is a new program in Lexington, a kind of
town -wide book club, aiming to bring our diverse town together around one great book and important ideas. Lex-
ington resident, Harvard Professor and Naturalist E.O. Wilson's book "The Future of Life" has been chosen as the
book for this year. In addition to the educational and community- building goals, this particular book was chosen to
raise awareness of the critical environmental issues facing us in the 21 st century. Two events are currently sched-
uled at the Senior Center as part of Lexington Reads. On Wednesday, March 9, from 10:00 to 11:30, there will
be a showing of the film "Lost Worlds: Life in the Balance," a fascinating exploration of the mysteries of our
planet's biological diversity. This film was originally shown in IMAX theaters. The scenes atop the almost inacces-
sible mountains in Venezuela that inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel, The Lost World, are not to be missed.
This film illustrates the importance of saving biodiversity on our planet, which is at the heart of Wilson's book.
Discussion will follow the showing of the 45- minute film. On Monday, April 4, from 10:30 to 12:00, there will
be a discussion group on the book "The Future of Life," led by members of the Lexington Reads committee. The
book is available at the Senior Center library, Cary Memorial Library, and is being sold at cost by Sundial Book-
store. ($8.45 for the soft cover.) Lexington Reads hope is that sharing a common book among people of all ages in
town adds richness and depth to the experience of reading as well as fostering community. There are programs be-
ing held throughout the schools on this book and its themes, as well as public events for people of all ages. The pro-
gram culminates with a talk by Bill McKibben, well -known environmentalist who grew up in Lexington. (April 16,
7:30 p.m., Hancock Church.) We hope the Lexington Reads program will become a yearly Lexington tradition.
