HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-11-09-TREE-min A meeting of the Lexington Tree Committee was held on November 9, 2017, 7:30-9:30 a.m. at
the Samuel Hadley Public Services Building. A quorum of five was present.
Members Present: Chris Filadoro, Superintendent of Public Grounds, John Frey (chair), Jewel
Kuljian,Gerry Paul,Anne Senning,Nancy Sofen

The meeting acted on the following items:

1. Anne Senning was appointed as scribe: The minutes of the meeting of October 12, 2017
were approved.
2. Report on open meeting lecture: Chairman, John Frey attended a lecture on updated
practices for open meetings. After a discussion it was decided that tree committee minutes
should be completed within 10 days. They should contain date, time, place, members, actions
and votes, summary of matters discussed and a list documents "used" or presented.
3.Tree Inventory: Chris Filadoro reported that bidding for vendors is in process.
4.Bylaw Tree removal applications and activity: Chris Filadoro reported that 38 Summit Rd.
was neither a renovation, nor a bylaw site. It is an eight house development involving both an
external and internal road.
5. Town Tree Manual Report: John Frey and Anne Senning presented three Planting Section
pages of the Tree Management Manual fourth edition; the revised Balled and Burlaped Planting
Directions, a new Figure, TREE PLANTING GUIDELINES (BARE ROOT) and a new section,
Bare Root Planting Directions. The tree committee voted to approve three pages, with edits.
Edits will be incorporated and reviewed by the Tree Committee at a future meeting. John and
Anne reported that the revised Tree Bylaw was approved by the Tree Committee on June 8,
2017.
6.Fall tree planting: Seventy trees which Chris Filadoro ordered from Schichtel's have arrived
and are ready to plant. Matt Foti has the bid of$26,000 to plant these trees. Chris has the map of
the 56 locations designated by species for the Massachusetts Ave/Fottler Ave to Bow St project
prepared by Nancy Sofen and Gerry Paul. Additional Setback and Street tree locations are to be
determined.
7.Mass Ave.sidewalk reconstruction Bow St to Fottler Ave update: See discussion under#6.
8.New Tree Committee Member Search: Richard Goldhammer introduced himself to the Tree
Committee as a potential candidate. John Frey,Chairman will post the openings.
9.Tree Committee web site: Nancy Sofen reported no update at this time.
10. Replace dead striped maple in Nell's grove: Chris Filadoro reported that this tree will be
replaced. He plans to send text to Matt Foti.
11. David William's request for funding the proposed Granite Forest grove in Lincoln
Park: David Williams expressed his gratitude through John Frey to the Tree Committee for the
funding of two trees for the Granite Forest in Lincoln Park.
12. Grove Street.Dense housing development and its effect on surrounding tree loss: Gerry
Paul will follow up.
13.Request made to place under best practices policies
a. Pavement cutouts for planting
b. Use of Google Docs for communication among team members for tree planting
There was no remote participation. The meeting was not recorded.
