• School Building Project update: Louise & Curt
In October, school hosted a community evening with the
architects visioning for new school; teachers were invited
to attend an afternoon session to offer ideas; the slides
were shared with Boston parents at the November School
Committee meeting to get their feedback
A team of teachers, parents and architects visited four
schools both designed by same architects and different in
November
Some highlights shared by families -- bright, colorful,
welcoming office, interactive displays (2D and 3D),
technology folded into building, capture aspects of our
murals to bring in pieces of old school, glass stairwells so
could see movement, porches outside classroom,
importance of natural light emphasized, yet consider how
direct sunlight can be blinding, classrooms fitted for
amplification (helps students focus)
Design decisions regarding where to place counselor,
Evaluation Team Supervisors, etc -- important to create
flexible spaces as grow into building (ex of small
conference room being used as office now to fit needs of
school)
Other design features observed at school visits include:
all common areas on first floor (which has pros and
cons); glass all along classrooms -- inviting yet had
security concerns and challenge to keep glass clean;
dishwashing room io -- consideration environment and
our recycling program is importantfirm is seeking honest
feedback regarding their designs
Outdoor spaces -- safety is key, arrival/dismissal design
for efficiency and order, access road needed for police
and fire; hopeful to have space for garden or outdoor
classroom; Hastings will be the largest school with the
least amount of green space per child.
