HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-11-28-HASTINGS-min Meeting: School Based Site Council – Maria Hastings Elementary Minutes Date: Monday 11-28-16 Time: 7:45 am – 8:30 am Location: Library, Maria Hastings Elementary, 7 Crosby Road, Lexington, MA Present: Lisa Contre, Brenda Rich, Susan Campbell, Louise Lipsitz, Anne Knight, Jane Kalinski, Lance Conrad, Curt Barrentine • Review and approve any outstanding minutes -- will be sent electronically • School Building Project update: Louise & Curt In October, school hosted a community evening with the architects visioning for new school; teachers were invited to attend an afternoon session to offer ideas; the slides were shared with Boston parents at the November School Committee meeting to get their feedback A team of teachers, parents and architects visited four schools both designed by same architects and different in November Some highlights shared by families -- bright, colorful, welcoming office, interactive displays (2D and 3D), technology folded into building, capture aspects of our murals to bring in pieces of old school, glass stairwells so could see movement, porches outside classroom, importance of natural light emphasized, yet consider how direct sunlight can be blinding, classrooms fitted for amplification (helps students focus) Design decisions regarding where to place counselor, Evaluation Team Supervisors, etc -- important to create flexible spaces as grow into building (ex of small conference room being used as office now to fit needs of school) Other design features observed at school visits include: all common areas on first floor (which has pros and cons); glass all along classrooms -- inviting yet had security concerns and challenge to keep glass clean; dishwashing room io -- consideration environment and our recycling program is importantfirm is seeking honest feedback regarding their designs Outdoor spaces -- safety is key, arrival/dismissal design for efficiency and order, access road needed for police and fire; hopeful to have space for garden or outdoor classroom; Hastings will be the largest school with the least amount of green space per child. Upcoming dates: o December 15 faculty meeting at Estabrook so full professional staff can tour the building; evening meeting December 15 community meeting to tour Estabrook; o December 20 architects present to School Committee with three options: renovate, renovate with addition or new building. o December 22 permanent building committee (which includes two Hastings parents, Curt Barrentine and Andrew Clark) votes. o January 4 submission to MSBA o Mid February MSBA response • Member initiated discussion Next meetings December 19 January 30
