Minutes January 18, 2007
The meeting was called to order by the chair, Betsey Weiss at 4:05 PM
Present: Leo McSweeney, Richard Pagett, Sandy Shaw, Wendy Manz, Betsey Weiss,
Marilyn Fenollosa, Norman Cohen, Joel Adler, and Dick Wolk
Unifying Signage: Research and advice of counsel indicates that this proposal is not
eligible for CPA funding. It was moved and adopted to inform the applicant of the
decision. In the event that conflicting advice becomes available the committee will
reconsider. Vote 8 to 0 in the affirmative.
East Lexington Library Study: It was moved and unanimously adopted to approve the
request of $43,000 for a study of the Stone Building. Vote 9 to 0 in the affirmative.
Cary Hall Renovation and Restoration as a Performance Center:
Moved and approved by a 5 to 4 vote that $88,000 be granted for a study of the hall to
include: a feasibility, impact, and operations analysis ($10,000); architectural concept and
performance studies ($70,000); and installation of blackout curtains ($8,000). However,
if the $10,000 feasibility, impact, and operations analysis shows that the project should
go no further, then the additional $70,000 for architectural concept and performance
studies will not be spent.
An additional motion was made and approved by a 6 to 3 vote to add an additional
$59,130 to the funding to include a stage extension ($20,000), motorized rigging batten
($20,000), lighting over stage extension ($15,000), a dimmer pack ($2,000), and a curtain
over the batten ($2,130).
Thus the sum total of the approved grant is $147,130
West Lexington Greenway Corridor:
It was moved and unanimously approved by a vote of 9 to 0 to fund the proposal to
develop a master plan for connecting all of Lexington’s conservation lands west of I-95
in a passive trail network. The project’s centerpiece will be the construction of a high-
quality connector trail between the Minuteman Bikeway and the Battle Road Trail in the
minuteman National Park. The approved amount is $125,000
Douglas House:
Approval of a grant for $300,000 was voted 8 to 1. This amount will insure completion of
phase 1 of the project and result in the addition of 15 units of 40B certified housing to
Lexington’s affordable housing stock.
