April 12, 1988
Members present: J. Frey (chair), N. Bogen, J, Eddison, B. Whitman, R. Bradley, E. Adler
1 Minutes of March 8, 1988 approved.
2. Everyone present agreed that the rewritten version of Article 34: Design Guideline --
Lexington
Center', which is to be distributed to Town Meeting members as background material
looked good and included what needed to be said.
3. Elaine Adler raised the question of whether there might be a Town law prohibiting tour
buses from leaving their motors running while parked near the Green. Jack thought there might
be, but some investigating would be necessary to find out for sure. All agreed that the resulting
exhaust from idling bus motors was unpleasant.
4. Jack Eddison described the results of the lobbying he has been engaged in on behalf of
Article 34. A number of good people will be lobbying for the article. Jack hoped that the 4.
positioning of the article, which is to follow the controversial parking study article, would not
put it in jeopardy
At an East Lexington meeting, Jack learned that residents of that part of town are disturbed that
Article 34 addresses only the Center They feel slighted and would be more apt to support the
issue if the study included improvement to East Lexington. DAC committee members agreed
that East Lexington provided a different issue from the Center, as the commercial area from
Berman s to Lexington Toyota is privately owned land rather than town owned. As a result, the
Town does not have jurisdiction over improvements. However, it was agreed that a study,
including maps and an inventory of current appointments would be helpful in assessing needs.
It was suggested that a separate article should be amended to Article 34 requesting an
additional $7000 for a study of East Lexington. Jack Eddison said he believed the East Lexington
area was included on the aerial map, providing the basis for a larger scale map of the area. In
addition, the report resulting from the study could be created partially from a duplication of
effort in matters such as selection of furniture, bus shelters, plantings, and other equipment,
justifying the smaller sum.
John Frey suggested that some East Lexington people be invited to our next meeting on May
10th so they can air their concerns. All thought this was a good idea.
Jack invited committee members to speak on behalf of Article 34 at the Town Meeting on April
13th and encouraged members to continue to lobby on behalf of the article.
Respectfully submitted,
Elaine Adler
