October 5, 2004
PRESENT Richard Pagett, Hank Manz. Tony Close,Dan Fenn, Bill Kennedy Deborah
Brown, Evelyn Silber, George Burnell and Lori Manning, Clerk.
The committee met prepared to interview two candidates. Members of the committee
updated each other on contacts they had made during the week. Mr. Manz informed the
committee that one of the resumes they were receiving that night was submitted before
the Selectmen's decision and the candidate was no longer interested in the Interim
position.
The two candidates were then interviewed, one after the other. The committee asked
them each a number of identical questions, such as: What strategies have you developed
for keeping a Board of Selectmen fully informed ?; What do you see as the biggest
challenge you will face in this position?. Lexington favors a collaborative approach to
the budget process, which includes the School Committee, two finance committees,
Town Meeting, the Board of Selectmen, and citizens. Tell us how you will mange this
process; You are faced with a decision that will not satisfy everybody, and in this case,
will satisfy one group almost not at all. Describe how you have managed this type of
decision in the past; Describe your experience in collective bargaining. At the end of the
question period the candidates were given the opportunity to ask questions of the
committee.
At the conclusion of the second interview the committee agreed they had two viable
candidates, and would do some further investigation of the candidates.
The meeting adjourned at 9.00 p.m.
