August 10, 1982
Present Sally Castleman, Elaine Dratch, Lance Neumann, Sara Arnold, Steve Caplan,
Duncan Todd
Steven Caplan of Gray Lines met with T A C He proposed an alternative
approach to the schedule, mostly focussing on the P.M schedule
1 The "Load and Go" concept would work better for about 80% of riders
During the peak hours of 4 50 - 5 15 P M , he would have buses line
up at Government Center and leave as soon as they are filled He
said people would be happier because of shorter waits, no standees,
"better control " (for him)
2 Initially, he tried to convince T A C to eliminate all but the Government
Center stop
a Copley Square
Not all buses need to go there He would like to eliminate the peak
hour buses from Copley, so that "load and go" would be more effective
from Government Center His survey, which was taken last week,
indicated that this would inconvenience only 8 - 10 people
b Haymarket
People who get on here are complaining that they never get seats -
are asking for refunds, etc He wants to eliminate Haymarket stop
and have people walk up to Government Center
Some points brought out in discussion
Duncan Todd, a commuter A regular, dependable, schedule is more important to
riders than price or place of departure Hub bus lost riders because of school
buses, standees, missed runs, etc Riders are willing to give Gray Lines a good
chance - are looking for improved service Also
a He wants to be sure that the late (6 30 P M ) bus does not get
eliminated It is a "fall-back" for all late workers It increases
daily riders because it is available, even though it is not full
b Commented on Friday P M - Should find alternate route - heavy traffic
Lance Neumann Regarding dropping of Haymarket Those people will perceive
less service, even though 90% of people will get better service
Suggested that we let people get used to Gray Line, a new company, before
springing changes on them

Elaine Dratch Doesn 't like eliminating Haymarket Suggested buses leave
Government Center before full Steve Caplan responded that this defeats purpose
of "load and go" He would have to turn away riders Elaine also thought gap
between 4 20 and 5 40 Copley bus was too large Doesn't accommodate people
leaving their jobs at normal work hours
Sally Castleman Questioned validity of summer survey Caplan responded
that proportions will be the same
Caplan also wanted to put Bedford as last drop off Wanted to make A M runs
earlier to alleviate crowding
Proposed Schedule
Copley 4 05 4 204 45 , 5 40 6 10
Government Ctr 4 30 4 40 1 4 50 5 00 5 151 5 30 6 00 6 30
Load ano bo
T.A C wanted a 5 10 bus from Copley
Steve Caplan was asked to submit a proposed schedule for review
II Depot Square Edison will dig holes and DPW will install posts
III Decision made to postpone map because
1 Commuter schedule not ready
2 Ads not all sold
3 Hudson airport run not decided
IV Publicity ideas
1 ,000,000th riders
9 A M - 2 P.M - make an award to rider
V Next Meeting
Tentatively August 17, if Steve Caplan can submit a schedule for review
This would allow time for the T A C to report to the Selectmen at their
August 23 meeting
