Members of the Friends of Hennesey Field were present and asked to be on the agenda at the next
meeting on September 17, 1997
2. The meeting minutes from July 16, 1997 were approved.
3 Soccer Fields - Lexington Youth Soccer (LYS)
Carla Fortmann and Dick Thuma of LYS reviewed a letter that was given to Karen with their
three primary interests:
1 Extra field maintenance support on a yearly basis.
2. A few capital projects that might not happen within the current budget constraints and
priorities
3 General support for the projects the Recreation Department sees in the future that will
benefit soccer in Lexington.
Two years ago LYS slice seeded Diamond and Muzzey with general liming. They are requesting
Recreation Committee approval to contract with Jack Blenkhorn of Arcadia Landscaping to do
slice seeding, fertilize seeded areas, and lime the soccer fields at Clarke, Muzzey, and Diamond,
during the first week in September These fields take a beating and deserve some support from
LYS. To increase the number of fields and locations LYS has come up with more creative ways
to develop more small sided games. The Recreation Committee approves the work proposed for
Clarke, Muzzey and Diamond soccer fields. Brian Gilbert supports the projects and will work
with LYS.
( - Brian added information on the Worthen Road soccer field and how a drainage system could give
the field more usage. Brian does have on paper plans that map out how to get water from point A
to point B. There is presently a well with an outlet to assist in the drainage. He is looking to
install an underwater drainage to prevent puddles. Brian says that he is optimistic and things look
well to keep going with draining the Worthen Road field. Brian will be requesting assistance from
Minuteman Tech on this project. Karen feels this would be a good partnership that will be a
win/win situation for everyone.
4. Capital Plan
Karen is in the process of developing the FY99 budget and the 5 year capital plan. Karen
requested feedback from the committee. It was recommended to remove Willards Woods
because it is no longer under the jurisdiction of Recreation. The Center Athletic Lighting Project
will be removed as the project has been completed.
5 Ballfield Lights -Update
Since our last meeting the Senior Babe Ruth team scheduled a tournament under the lights.
Karen spoke to Rick DeAngelis about presenting a formal request for the extension of the hours
for the light permits. This would need to be reviewed and approved by the Recreation
Committee. The Recreation Committee agreed to go out one evening and see the impact of the
lights on the surrounding neighborhoods. Historically the lights have been turned out by 10.00
pm. Karen feels that when we receive a request for lights after 10.00 pm we really need to
evaluate the situation and get neighborhood input. Paul feels the committee should remain pro
active keeping the neighborhood involved.
A concession stand showed up at the Center#1 ballfield without approval. Any group wishing to
put up a concession stand needs prior approval from the Board of Selectmen, the Board of
Health, and the Recreation Department.
The Center#1 baseball field should not be used until the project is completed. Currently the
meter needs to be installed, padding needs to be put on the field poles, and the timing control
system needs to be in place. No permits will be issued until these items are completed and turned
over to the town. The computer timing system will cost over$7000 We have also had problems
with the softball field light box being broken into and the lights turned on and off manually
Karen is addressing this issue.
6. Brian's Report
The Sand Volleyball Court is ready for use. An Allen wrench is needed to adjust the net up and
down for men's and ladies' play The net will be put up whenever Recreation needs it.
Recreation will start off slowly with a Men's league of 4-6 teams and a Women's league. Brian
will put up the nets and Karen will get a sign for permit usage. League play will begin in the
Spring.
Lincoln#2 soccer field is now closed and Lincoln#3 is open. Harrington#2 will be closed in mid
September for work. At Pine Meadows they are moving the cart path on#8 and installing cart
paths at#6 and#7 and at the bottom of#7 and#8 The bidding process for the Marcite repairs at
the pool will open on September 18 with a completion date of October 24 Karen and Brian will
meet with Frank Fields to go over the details of the project.
7 The Old Res
Paul Keane says that the Res looks shabby Brian will send a work crew to the Res. Don
questioned whether water chestnuts were becoming a problem. Karen said the issue is not
serious, but the progress of this invasive plant is continually being observed. Karen and Brian will
meet to discuss beautification projects at the Res.
The meeting was adjourned at 1000 pm.
