MINUTES
10/30/96
INTRODUCTION OF NANCY FREED, DIRECTOR, SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT,
TOWN OF LEXINGTON
Nancy Freed who was introduced to the committee as the new Director of the Town's Social
Service Department said that she had a personal interest in the work of the Enablement
Committee referred to her MBA and M.S W degrees and experience in Bedford.
Lorraine Buonomo who has a psychological disability expressed her perception that the
committee had a bias toward issues of physical disability but other committee members with
cognitive disabilities spoke of similar issues Nancy Freed who has MS referred to the
considerable attitudinal, more than physical, barriers which she encountered.
Steve Baran informed the Committee that Cari Luterman was now out of the hospital and
would welcome hearing from members.
TITLE II MUNICIPAL, COUNTY AND STATE FACILITIES
Curb cuts
Recent Minuteman article discussed the work of the Enablement Committee including cur cut
modifications going on around the Minuteman statue
Handicap Parking
Handicap spaces at Edison Way also Bay Bank/Cambridgeport Bank were discussed. Emily
wrote a memo to George Woodbury regarding the inadequate number of handicap spaces in
relation to what the law requires, also referred to spaces that were not close enough to
buildings The need was seen to add one handicap space at Edison Way or one at the rear
end near Depot Square at the corner near Warm Hearts and Cold Noses
The garage in the Salter Building was to have had handicap parking available to the commu-
nity It was thought that an agreement had been made to this effect
Steve will invite Bigelow Moore to the next meeting of the Committee
Hearing accessibility Selectmen's Meeting Room Rick Safford update
Rick Safford has met with Caleb Warner to discuss various options They are considering a
system of portable microphones descended from the ceiling. Testing will be carried out soon
The matter will be placed on the Selectmen s agenda.

TITLE III - PLACE OF PUBLIC ACCOMMODATION
Wilson Farm
Emily referred to the considerable progress that had been made at Wilson Farm but objected
to non-handicapped drivers being directed to handicapped spaces.
Lexington Arts & Crafts Society
The Society has made considerable progress The Committee will send a letter of support
welcoming them to be in touch regarding any remaining problems
King's Mobil (corner of Waltham Street and Route 2A)
Sign should be removed.
Bragger's Bagel Bakery
( There are no handicap spaces in violation of ADA regulations Absentee owner
Postal boxes
Steve Baran will call Steve McCarthy to inquire about status of work done to make some
postal boxes accessible to handicapped users
Pilgrim Church
They have erected a new ramp and are requesting a variance so that they will not have to
build a new bathroom in the old part of the church Approval from the Committee is contingent
upon their implementing a number of low cost modifications See attached
