HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-04-08-COA-min.pdf LEXINGTON COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES APRIL 8, 1998 ATTENDING Clark Cowen, Chairperson Phyllis Rand Nancy Freed, Staff Jacqueline Davison Peg Jemison Sheldon Spector Irving Rothman, Minuteman Home Care Liaison Roz Gittleman, Human Services Liaison John Curry Dan Fenn, Board of Selectmen Liaison Barbara Rubin Jane Trudeau Chris Gelling, Staff Anne Kriebel Marilyn Campbell Carol Murphy Donald Graham, Visitor CHAIRPERSON'S REMARKS: Clark Cowen called the meeting to order at 4 30 p.m. and welcomed Marilyn Campbell, new Board Member Marilyn was the Meals on Wheels Coordinator in Lexington and is now the COA Director in Weston. Clark also introduced Donald Graham, a prospective Board treasurer who came to the meeting to observe. MINUTES: The minutes of the March 11 meeting were accepted with the following corrections: on page 1 under Chairperson's Remarks, the second sentence should read "to report at the May meeting" On page 2 under Education Committee, Peg Jemison's name should be deleted. BOARD COMMITTEES: A list of the Board Committees, which includes the members of each committee, was distributed. An additional committee to study and observe the Dining Room Program, including the Meals on Wheels and Congregate Meals programs, was suggested and added to the list. Carol Murphy volunteered to serve on the Adult Social Daycare and the Dining Room Committees. Marilyn Campbell will be on the Senior Health Monitor Committee. Clark passed around a list of the April programs and activities for each member to check off two programs they will attend to observe and report on at the May meeting. Chris Gelling will mail guidelines to the members to use for this purpose. Nancy and other staff members will set up meetings with the various committees. John Curry volunteered to help the Social Daycare Committee as he has data on the possibility of adding a fifth to the program. Clark suggested that the next Board Meeting on May 13 be held at the Adult Day Care House. PPROGRAM COORDINATOR REPORT Chris Gelling distributed copies of the room schedule for April, which indicates the use of almost every room at all times. Chris works on the Senior Volunteer Corps, the Tax Write Off, and intergenerational programs, as well as overall programming and the Newsletter She thanked the Education Committee for their help with the Post Grad and Women's History Programs. ( Chris reported new programs that are well attended---Yoga, T'ai Chi, Quilting, and Fitness classes and a Chess Club, Chair Massage, and an After Hours Group There are also new men's programs led by Steve Baran and Clark Cowen. On the intergenerational programs, Chris is working with the schools. There is a Senior Center partnership with the Fiske School and a Dining Room program with a fourth grade from the Hastings School. Children from St. Brigids have a Monday afternoon program with the Seniors. The Clark Middle School offers a computer program for Seniors, and students from the High School help with programs at the Senior Center as part of community service. Clark noted disappointment with the Senior coverage in the Lexington Minuteman. It was explained that they only reproduce the Newsletter Calendar He suggested the possibility of a weekly column; Nancy will look into this. FCOA AUCTION: Nancy invited COA Board Members to attend on Friday, May 17, and wear name badges. It starts at 5:30 and tickets are $3.00 MUZZEY TRUSTEE UPDATE: Peg Jemison reported a very positive response to the use of the orange cones on the day of the Women's Conference; there were no complaints. The question of who owns the benches outside was brought up; they could use some refurbishing. Things seem to proceeding in a positive direction. EDUCATION COMMITTEE UPDATE: Barbara Rubin reported the fabulous success of the Women's History Program. It was oversubscribed; an indication for another one next year Nancy reminded members of the Joint Legislative Breakfast, sponsored by Minuteman Home Care and the Councils on Aging. It will be held at the Senior Center on Friday, May 1, 8:30 a.m. Local State Representatives and Senators will be invited to discuss senior care items in the FY99 State Budget.
