MINUTES OF BOARD MEETING
April 12, 1994

Chairman Bob Cushman called the meeting to order at 4:35 p.m.
Remarks: Bob announced the Friday Flea Market at the Center, a FCOA fund raising event. The
Minuteman Home Care Inc. will sponsor a Boston Pops visit on May 13. Cost is $36 per person,
also a fund raiser The COA budget was passed at the recent Town Meeting. There has been no
progress with the town-wide Health Committee, The chair appointed Jackie Davidson to nominate
a slate of Board officers for the next fiscal year The MBTA senior pass outreach program has been
reinstated.
Attending the Muzzey Board meetings: after additional discussion, it was suggested that Bob
Cushman approach Bill Hayes of the Muzzey Board to discuss our right to be a part of their board
meetings.
Minutes: The March board meeting minutes were accepted.
Financial Reports: Deferred to the next meeting upon the return of John Curry
Support Services: Karen Santucci reported on the first meeting which was held to plan and
consider the Day Care and the Senior Monitor programs. The agenda for the committee will
include' the Intake process referral handling, updating the Information and referral manual,
scholarships, Day Care transportation and three interns for Support Services. The committee
looks at Itself as a think-tank.
Intergenerational Committee' Diana Grammont reported on the progress of the town-wide
questionnaire survey To date over forty responses have been received, mostly from the
Lexington schools. There is a wide variety of ongoing programs with interaction between
Lexington's students and the town's senior citizens. The questionnaires will be entered into a
computer file The committee has under discussion a multi-generational program that may include
participants from grandparents, to parents and all ages of children The Massachusetts
Intergenerational Conference published an article on _exington's plans for intergenerational
activities, Indicating that we are right on the mark. The schools and GOA are co-sponsoring a
social study project on the Roaring Twenties. It will be videotaped at Brookhaven May 15
COA History Bill Sen and Dorothy Williams outlined the plan to write a history of the Lexington
Council on Aging. They recounted some of the early events leading to the founding of COA over
Iwo decades ago in 1972.
Director's Report' Linda handed out the property tax work-off program brochure, which is
being distributed to all Lexington department heads. Launching the program will require $5,000
( from the Friends of COA. An intern will come on board May 15 to give the program an assist.

The Death & Dying conference is scheduled for May 18 at the Center Clark Cowen suggested
we include the word "dignity' in the program description, The committee felt that it can be named
"Death & Dying: The Dignity of Choice'

• Data on the Supper Club results to date indicate that for lack of leadership at Vinebrook,
attendance there has not been up to expectations. The Vinebrook site may be dropped in the
future. Minuteman Home Care will review the July-August data and see if the Supper Club will
again be provided with covered dish.
Three projects for the recreation program are being considered tennis, walking, and
aerobic/strength conditioning at the Strike One Fitness Center A cost proposal to the Town is
next.
• The downstairs room dividers have been ordered, with the purchase money contributed by
FCOA. We will also need $2,600 for some recarpeting at the Center There was discussion of the
drainage problem along the front walkways.
The MMHC audit of our Day Care program gave us a very high rating.
The Share-A-Ride servicer has been late 15 to 45 minutes recently Carolyn Griffith is
documenting this problem so that it may be taken up with SAR management.
We plan to invite George Smith to our May board meeting. The blood-pressure clinic serves 70
persons here and others at the three villages. The lateness of nurses to our clinics have caused
anguish among the seniors here.
New Business:
Jackie questioned if the walkway patching may be deficient.
A tree planting on April 29 will take place at Hastings park In memory of Jacqueline Smith and Tim
Quinlan.
Should we sponsor a monthly trip of seniors to the Minuteman School Mall for lunch and visits to
the gift shop, frozen foods store, and bakery?
On the question of Center space expansion, it was suggested that a cost estimate be made.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
