SEPTEMBER MEETING MINUTES
Chairperson Clark Cowen called the meeting to order at 4 40 p m.
The minutes of the September 13, 1995, meeting were approved
Clark congratulated Dan Fenn on receiving the UN Assoc award
CRAIRPERSONS'S REPORT
Clark attended the Selectmen's meeting on September 29, 1995, at
which time he spoke about 1 The two proposed assisted living
projects; 2 The Senior Volunteer Corps and the need for a project
placement coordinator for the Corps; and 3 The overcrowded con-
ditions at the Senior Center
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Linda passed around a committee assignment sign-up sheet for the
year Linda discussed the capitol budget submission, which is due
on October 27th. She will be working with John Curry to complete
and submit the budget by the October 27th deadline The budget
will include a request for $60,000 for air conditioning the up-
stairs of the Senior Center and increasing the air flow downstairs
The $60, 000 is the figure the engineering firm quoted
As far as the personal/operating budget is concerned, there will be
an increase to cover part of the program coordinator' s salary and
an inclusion of the tax write-off program in the COA budget It
was suggested that we ask for funding to study long-range planning,
expansion and/or a branch office The Board agreed that long range
planning funds were needed Linda will work out the details with
John Curry
ASSISTED LIVING UPDATE
A letter was received from the Planning Board regarding the two
proposals to go before Town Meeting--the Grey Nuns and the
Marriott Corp The Planning Board will be meeting with the COA's
housing committee within the next month to discuss these plans

SENIOR VOLUNTEER CORPS UPDATE
Steve Baran reported that Symmes has granted the COA $5, 950 toward
this project Raytheon will decide in December with regard to our
request for grant Dan Fenn reported that the Town is establishing
a new fund from donations, one purpose of which will be to provide
seed money for projects of community betterment, such as the Senior
Volunteer Corps
Many letters of support were received from agencies in response to
our letters soliciting interest Linda noted that Steve deserves
commendation for the tremendous amount of work that he has done on
the project
RECREATION UPDATE
Moira Abrevaya was officially welcomed Part of her responsibili-
ties will be to increase recreational activities for the newly
retired and younger seniors To this end, she will be convening an
Adventure Group in November to discuss various outdoor activities--
cross-country skiing, canoeing, hiking Through such activities,
it may be possible to change the stereotypical image of the Senior
Center A suggestion was made for a survey questionnaire to be
included the COA Newsletter, and, possibly, to rename the Center
Phyllis Rand reported on the enrollment of some of the fall
Recreation Department's programs Ancient Mind-Body Health has 19,
the bike group 10-12 , Senior Fitness at Strike One 5, and the other
programs have seniors, as well as younger participants The walk-
ing group and the golf group are also active
FACILITY UPDATE
Linda reported a new industrial dishwasher has been purchased for
the kitchen at a cost of $3200, and the Friends will pay for the
installation and wiring, cost $500 to $600 Linda and Julia Novak
will be meeting with the Muzzey Trustees soon to try to work out a
memo of understanding
HOME SAFETY
Clark suggested that the SVC might do a safety survey of homes
where older, frail seniors live and follow-up with ideas for
improvement
The meeting was adjourned at 6 p m
