HomeMy WebLinkAbout1994-11-09-COA-min.pdf LEXINGTON COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD MEETING MINUTES NOVEMBER 9, 1994 Attending Clark Cowen, Chair Monica Chang Frank Chen Jackie Davison Jack Fisher Eugene Isotti Phyllis Rand Barbara Rubin Dan Fenn, Board of Selectmen Donna Hooper, Human Services Committee Linda Crew Vine, Executive Director Steve Baran, Staff Chairperson Clark Cowen convened the meeting at 4 44 p m He wel- comed Jack Fisher and Phyllis Rand to the Board and acknowledged the participation of Dan Fenn of the Board of Selectmen Clark reported that Jackie Davison and he had attended a White House Conference on Aging held in Peabody Linda will attend a similar meeting at the State Department of Administration December 6th and 7th At the first FY96 town budget meetir., , the COA will file three supplemental budget items $5, 000 for phone connections, $12, 000 for property tax work-off, and $70, 000 for air-conditioning work OCTOBER MEETING MINUTES The minutes of the October Board meeting were approved LOWER LEVEL CARPETING Carpeting of the lower level areas lt a cost of approximately $7 , 000 was approved, pending the choice of carpet colors Jackie and Phyliss will offer a recommendation for the carpet colors LIONS CLUB The donation by the Lions Club will be used to pay for an Inter- generational Directory, to fund a prom, and for holiday activities These are all within the definition of group activities -1- COA Board Meeting Minutes -2- November 9, 1994 EDUCATIONAL COMMITTEE Barbara Rubin reported on activities in 1995 January--mini workshops on Medi Gap, long term care,. and Knowing Your Resources; February--a Sweetheart Pet Day; March--workshop on assisted living; April--a repeat on death and dying; May--conference on Alzheimer' s disease DIRECTOR'S REPORT 1) We may conduct a paid study of the Center's air quality 2) The Muzzey Condominium Board is taking up the letter regarding parking complaints by Jeffrey Corazzini 3 ) The October Walk-a-Thon netted $700 for the Center 4) The AARP driver's class for seniors has been very popular Fifty-five people participated Our police chief will endorse holding two or three more similar classes in cooperation with Bedford 5) Ann Novak won the Community Leadership Award at the Minuteman Home Care Annual Meeting 6) Carol Murphy won the national prize in the Ms Senior Sweetheart competition 7) Marie Galloway, Meals-on-Wheels Coordinator, is back at work 8) Linda is looking for Board members as volunteers to deliver Thanksgiving dinners to homebound seniors 9) Linda is concerned that the COA is not mentioned in the Home Care Corporation's publicity as beiig the single point of assessment for home-care services CENTER FACILITIES Steve Baran reported on the Center's physical facilities Bob Harris and the Enablement Committee members toured our facilities and spotted several needed improvements handicapped assess at COA Board Meeting Minutes -3- November 9, 1994 the entryway doors; ground floor bathroom changes; the A/V alarm; and the fire escape exit Some of the changes will be done during the week between Christmas and New Yea.•s; the bathroom renovations will cost approximately $1,200 to $1, 500 SENIOR SERVICE CORPS Clark Cowen initiated a discussion on the idea of creating a Senior Service Corps to help more seniors in Lexington to volunteer their time and talent in different activities Board members voiced their support for this proposition Frank Chen thought that perhaps we vAould discover the level of interest for this by a survey Dan Fenn suggested that each of us can identify one or more town institutions which can use the vol- untary work of talented seniors Linda Vine cited the interest of seniors who volunteer to do the town departments' administrative tasks, even when these seniors did not qualify for the Tax Workoff Program due to income levels Linda will provide an intern ' s report on the subject to Clark Cowen for further consideration The meeting was adjourned at 6 00 p m Respectfully submitted, Frank Chen, Secretary
