PERMANENT BUILDING COMMIT FEE
Notes of Tuesday June 26. 2001 meeting in the Construction Trailer on the high school grounds.
The meeting was an informal brainstorming session with no quorum and began about 7 10 p.m.
Attending were Chairman Kelley along with other PBC members Poinelli and Touart. Also
attending was Director of School Facilities John Moynihan.
An informal meeting last week (hat was attended by about 75 people and sponsored by the
TMMA, discussed planning for the two new schools on the Fisk and Harrington sites.
Since the best place for the new Fiske school is just where the present school sits and the sitc is
so small, it was decided that a site would have to be found for a temporary swing-space
elementary school to be planted while the other four elementary schools are being renovated,
Lincoln Park was rejected because of its former role as the town dump that is still venting. It is
OK to use for an open-air recreation site but would be unsuited for a school unless the site were
capped as is now required for former dumps (but was not when the Lincoln Street site was retired
from that use.)
Comments on preliminary site plans from TLCR included the following main points.
Fiske driveway to exit from the school to Adams Street should be moved to the southwest
boundary of the site. In this way the Adams-East-Hathaway intersection could be simplified and
a significant part of the school property that now lies northeast of the present driveway could be
utilized, enlarging the utility of the site. This recommended relocation might present a sight line
or grading challenge, it was noted.
The Harrington site parking lot drawn by the architects met disfavor of the committee, who
recommended that it be broken up into separated parking lot segments. They also recommended
that parking for the present Harrington school be clearly separated, possibly accessed from the far
side of the building, thus separating parking needs of the two buildings' users. It was noted that
the new Harrington would be considerably larger than the present school.
Possible sites around town and how to locate them was reviewed, with the inspired idea that a
deal might be worked out with Hayden Recreation Center for temporary use of their lower
playing field that they use mostly for summer day camp. This will be explored.
The meeting ended at about 8.20 p.m.
