PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of Tuesday July 2. 2002 Mint meeting with members of the School Committee and the
Design Advisory Committee in the Conference Room, School Administration Building, as
approved November 12, 2002.
The meeting was called to order at 7:07 p.m. by PBC Chairman Kelley with other members
Cannalonga, Himmel, Johnson, Poinelli and Sperandio present. Also attending were School
Committee Representative to the PBC Anthony Close and School Superintendent Joanne Benton
as well as Project Manager/Owner's Representative Bill Kealy Representing the Design
Advisory Committee were Carl Oldenburg, John Frey Steve Hurley Eva Kassel and Olga
Voronina. Architect Todd Lee spoke for the architects, TLCR Associates. Also present was
Selectman Dawn McKenna.
Elevation drawings of both the Harrington and the Fiske schools were displayed by Lee to show
the similarity of the two schools Site and interior designs were also available. Lee pointed out
available parking on the Maple Street side as well as at the corners of the building where the
kindergarten and early learning center are located. Concern was expressed about handicap
access to the stage in the gymnasium where performances would take place. Lee noted that the
stage is only 18 inches above floor level, but it could be higher if necessary Portable bleachers
could be provided for better audience sight lines. A wood floor is budgeted.
Some details of bus drop off and truck deliveries are yet to be solved. Tony Close pointed out
that recreational users of the Harrington site will require increased parking. Upon Poinelli's
expression of concern about the frequent breakup of the building outlines, Lee immediately
sketched a straightening between two bays, suggesting that other indents could be eliminated.
Among other topics verbally explored: Operable windows and availability of outside air, areas
where skylights are considered, use of the chimney to mask air handling units and the like.
Poinelli pointed out that alternative energy grants are available for schools, but that they must be
applied for by July 12. While Lee made notes on this, various PBC members added that there
could be educational aspects for the uses of these $20,000 grants.
The Harrington School is still on target for completion of Design Development about September
1 with work on construction documents to begin by mid-September. Next week's design
meeting will concentrate on engineering systems to support the new Harrington school.
