School staff members attending included Director of School Facilities Paul McGonagle, Harrington Principal David Crumb, School Superintendent Joanne Benton. of the Harrington School. Also present were the following: School Committee member Tony Close, Harrington PTA co- presidents Judy Crocker and Mary Rae, and citizens Eric Brown and Henrietta Mei and Lexington Minuteman reporter Brian Kelly TLCR architects presenting progress on Design Development were Todd Lee and Carol Marsh. Materials Distributed included Schedule No. 2 for the Harrington School, dated 9/3/02. TLCR s Acoustic consultant, after examining the plans and specifications, stated that most classrooms would be capable of attaining a 35 decibel level, with the possible exception of classrooms adjoined by a door when the other classroom is noisy and classrooms that back up to bathrooms when toilets flush. These conditions could be mitigated with insulation and wall treatment. The gymnasium and cafeteria would be other exceptions. Site summary showed a `simplified" plan, with a two-lane drive in from Lowell Street and two of the three lanes out to Maple Street, and only one lane in from Maple. Bus drop off would stretch alongside the Kindergarten pod wing in a two-lane area separated from the through drive by a curb. There will be no special drop-off place for kindergarten pupils. About 198 parking places will be provided for the new and old Harrington schools as well as for recreational uses. The kitchen deliveries drive (with about one or two vehicles in and out per school day) will have to be crossed by students on a well marked crosswalk. Aspects of the interior were pointed out by the architects, including subtle long curves in the hall walls. The library is centrally located on the second floor, near where the hall narrows to an interesting bridge viewing the first floor Superintendent Benton reported that the Harrington Extended Day staff and board are pleased with recent adjustments to the plans for their program. In addition, the occupational therapy special education program of the school and teacher aides can be accommodated in the present plans. Bathrooms were planned without doors, but Principal Crumb strongly requested doors. Comment on the exterior from a DAC member 'like a village." Another concern raised was the presence of a barn of unknown ownership on school property Distributed copies of today's Harrington Schedule shows construction starting March 2003 and substantial completion August 2003, with Fiske demolition beginning then. Meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m. Respectfully submitted, j / Erna S. Greene, Secretary
